    Не квапся своїми уста́ми, і серце твоє нехай не поспішає казати слова́ перед Божим лицем, — Бог бо на небі, а ти на землі, тому́ то нехай нечисле́нними будуть слова́ твої!

    Fear God, Keep Your Vows

    Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.

    Бо як сон наступає через велику роботу, так багато слів має і голос безглу́здого.

    Do not be rash with your mouth,
    And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.
    For God is in heaven, and you on earth;
    Therefore let your words be few.

    Коли зробиш обі́тницю Богові, то не зволікай її виповнити, бо в Нього нема уподо́бання до нерозумних, а що́ ти обі́туєш, спо́вни!

    For a dream comes through much activity,
    And a fool’s voice is known by his many words.

    Краще не дати обі́ту, ніж дати обіт — і не спо́внити!

    When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it;
    For He has no pleasure in fools.
    Pay what you have vowed —

    Не давай своїм у́стам впроваджувати своє тіло у гріх, і не говори перед Анголом Божим: „Це помилка!“ Пощо Бог буде гні́ватися на твій голос, і діла́ твоїх рук буде нищити?

    Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.

    Бо марно́та в числе́нності снів, як і в мно́гості слів, але ти бійся Бога!

    Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your [a]excuse and destroy the work of your hands?

    Якщо ти побачиш у кра́ї якому ути́скування бідаря́ та пору́шення права та правди, не дивуйся тій речі, бо високий пильнує згори́ над високим, а над ними Всевишній.

    For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.

    І пожи́ток землі є для всіх, бо поле й сам цар обробляє.

    The Vanity of Gain and Honor

    If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent [b]perversion of justice and righteousness in a province, do not marvel at the matter; for high official watches over high official, and higher officials are over them.

    Хто срі́бло кохає, той не наси́титься сріблом, хто ж кохає багатство з прибу́тком, це марно́та також!

    Moreover the profit of the land is for all; even the king is served from the field.

    Як маєток примно́жується, то мно́жаться й ті, що його поїдають, і яка ко́ристь його власникові, як тільки, щоб бачили очі його?

    He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver;
    Nor he who loves abundance, with increase.
    This also is vanity.

    Сон солодкий в трудя́щого, чи багато, чи мало він їсть, а ситість багатого спати йому не дає.

    When goods increase,
    They increase who eat them;
    So what profit have the owners
    Except to see them with their eyes?

    Є лихо болюче, я бачив під сонцем його: багатство, яке береже́ться його власнико́ві на лихо йому, —

    The sleep of a laboring man is sweet,
    Whether he eats little or much;
    But the abundance of the rich will not permit him to sleep.

    і гине багатство таке в нещасли́вім випа́дку, а ро́диться син — і немає нічого у нього в руці:

    There is a severe evil which I have seen under the sun:
    Riches kept for their owner to his hurt.

    як він вийшов наги́й із утро́би матері своєї, так відхо́дить ізнов, як прийшов, і нічо́го не винесе він з свого тру́ду, що можна б узяти своєю рукою!

    But those riches perish through [c]misfortune;
    When he begets a son, there is nothing in his hand.

    І це те́ж зло болюче: так само, як він був прийшов, так віді́йде, — і яка йому ко́ристь, що трудився на вітер?

    As he came from his mother’s womb, naked shall he return,
    To go as he came;
    And he shall take nothing from his labor
    Which he may carry away in his hand.

    А до того всі дні свої їв у темно́ті, і багато мав смутку, й хвороби та люті.
  • 16
    And this also is a severe evil —
    Just exactly as he came, so shall he go.
    And what profit has he who has labored for the wind?

    Оце, що я бачив, як добре та гарне: щоб їла люди́на й пила, і щоб бачила добре в усьо́му своє́му труді́, що під сонцем ним тру́диться в час нечисле́нних тих днів свого віку, які Бог їй дав, — бо це доля її!

    All his days he also eats in darkness,
    And he has much sorrow and sickness and anger.

    Також кожна люди́на, що Бог дав їй багатство й маєтки, і вла́ду їй дав спожива́ти із то́го, та брати свою частку та тішитися своїм тру́дом, — то це Божий дару́нок!

    Here is what I have seen: It is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him; for it is his [d]heritage.

    Бо вона днів свого життя небагато на пам'яті матиме, — то Бог в її серце шле радість!

    As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his [e]heritage and rejoice in his labor — this is the gift of God.
