Оце слово, що було до Єремії від Господа, говорячи:
The Potter and the Clay
The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD saying,
The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD saying,
„Устань, і зійди́ до дому ганчара́, і там почуєш слова́ Мої“.
“Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will announce My words to you.”
І зійшов я до дому ганчара́, аж ось він робить працю на кружа́лі.
Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something on the wheel.
І в руках ганчара́ попсу́лась посу́дина, яку він із глини робив. І він зно́ву зробив з неї іншу посу́дину, як сподо́балося ганчаре́ві зробити.
But the vessel that he was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make.
„Чи не міг би зробити й Я вам, як ганча́р цей, о доме Ізраїлів? каже Господь. Ось як глина в руці ганчара́, так в руці Моїй, доме Ізраїля, й ви!
“Can I not, O house of Israel, deal with you as this potter does?” declares the LORD. “Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.
Я ча́сом кажу́ про наро́д та про ца́рство, щоб ви́рвати його, і щоб розбити та ви́губити,
“At one moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to uproot, to pull down, or to destroy it;
та коли цей наро́д, що про нього казав Я, пове́рнеться від свого зла, то пожалую Я щодо того зла, яке ду́мав чинити йому́.
if that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent concerning the calamity I planned to bring on it.
А ча́сом кажу́ про наро́д та про царство, щоб його збудувати та щоб посадити,
“Or at another moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to build up or to plant it;
та як він зро́бить зле в Моїх о́чах, щоб не слухатися Мого го́лосу, то пожа́лую щодо того добра́, про яке говорив, що вчиню́ Я його.
if it does evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will think better of the good with which I had promised to bless it.
А тепер скажи до юдея й до мешканців Єрусалиму, говорячи: Так говорить Господь: Ось готую лихе́ проти вас, і заду́мую за́дум на вас, — верніться ж ви кожен з дороги своєї лихо́ї, і полі́пшіть доро́ги свої й свої вчинки!
“So now then, speak to the men of Judah and against the inhabitants of Jerusalem saying, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Behold, I am fashioning calamity against you and devising a plan against you. Oh turn back, each of you from his evil way, and reform your ways and your deeds.”’
Та вони відказали: „Пропа́ло! бо ми бу́дем ходи́ти за своїми думка́ми, і кожен робитиме згідно з упе́ртістю серця свого́.“
“But they will say, ‘It’s hopeless! For we are going to follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’
Тому так промовляє Господь: Поспитайте но ви між наро́дами, — чи хто чув, як оце? Страшну річ учинила та діва Ізраїлева!
“Therefore thus says the LORD,
‘Ask now among the nations,
Who ever heard the like of this?
The virgin of Israel
Has done a most appalling thing.

Хіба́ сніг Ліва́ну зі́йде зо скелі на полі? Чи ви́сохнуть во́ди чужі та холодні, теку́чі?
‘Does the snow of Lebanon forsake the rock of the open country?
Or is the cold flowing water from a foreign land ever snatched away?

Бо про Мене забув Мій наро́д: вони ка́дять марно́ті, а та ро́бить їм так, що вони на дорогах своїх спотика́ються, на давніх путя́х, щоб ходити стежка́ми, по дорозі невби́тій,
‘For My people have forgotten Me,
They burn incense to worthless gods
And they have stumbled from their ways,
From the ancient paths,
To walk in bypaths,
Not on a highway,

щоб свій Край учинити страхі́ттям, посміхо́вищем вічним. Кожен, хто бу́де прохо́дити ним, остовпі́є та буде хита́ти головою своєю.
To make their land a desolation,
An object of perpetual hissing;
Everyone who passes by it will be astonished
And shake his head.

Мов вітер зо сходу, розвію Я їх перед во́рогом; поти́лицю, а не обличчя Я їм покажу у день їхнього го́ря!“
‘Like an east wind I will scatter them
Before the enemy;
I will show them My back and not My face
In the day of their calamity.’”

І сказали вони: „Ходіть, і обмірку́ємо за́міри на Єремію, бо не згинув Зако́н у священика, і рада в премудрого, а слово в пророка. Ходіть, і уда́рмо його язиком його власним, і не зважаймо на жодні слова́ його!“
Then they said, “Come and let us devise plans against Jeremiah. Surely the law is not going to be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the sage, nor the divine word to the prophet! Come on and let us strike at him with our tongue, and let us give no heed to any of his words.”
Послухай мене, о мій Господи, і почуй го́лос моїх супроти́вників!
Do give heed to me, O LORD,
And listen to what my opponents are saying!

Хіба́ замість доброго злим надолу́жено буде? Бо яму копають вони для моєї душі. Згадай же, що перед обличчям Твоїм я стояв, щоб до́бре про них говорити, щоб гнів Твій від них відверну́ти!

Тому їхніх синів віддай го́лодові, і мі́ццю меча́ викинь їх з Кра́ю, і бодай жінки їхні діте́й погуби́ли та вдо́вами стали, а їхні чолові́ки хай смертю повби́вані бу́дуть, юнаки́ їхні хай бу́дуть поби́ті мече́м на війні!
Therefore, give their children over to famine
And deliver them up to the power of the sword;
And let their wives become childless and widowed.
Let their men also be smitten to death,
Their young men struck down by the sword in battle.

Нехай чується крик з їхніх домі́в, — бо орду́ Ти знена́цька спрова́диш на них, — бо яму копали вони, щоб схопи́ти мене, і для ніг моїх па́стки поста́вили.

When You suddenly bring raiders upon them;

А Ти, Господи, знаєш увесь їхній за́мір на мене на смерть, — не прости їм провин, а гріха́ їхнього із-перед обличчя Свого не зітри́, і хай перед Тобою спіткну́ться вони, — зроби поміж ними оце під час гніву Свого́!
Yet You, O LORD, know
All their deadly designs against me;
Do not forgive their iniquity
Or blot out their sin from Your sight.
