“It has seemed good to me to declare the signs and wonders which the Most High God has done for me.

The Vision of a Great Tree
“I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and flourishing in my palace.
І аж останній прийшов перед мене Даниїл, якому ім'я́ Валтаса́р, як ім'я́ мого бога, і що в ньому дух Святого Бога. І я розповів йому сон та й сказав:
“I saw a dream and it made me fearful; and these fantasies as I lay on my bed and the visions in my mind kept alarming me.
„Валтаса́ре, начальнику чарівників, я знаю, що в тобі дух Святого Бога, і всяка таємниця не тяжка́ тобі. Скажи видіння мого сну, що я бачив, та його ро́зв'язку.
“So I gave orders to bring into my presence all the wise men of Babylon, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.
А видіння моєї голови на моєму ложі такі. Я бачив, аж ось дерево серед землі, а вишина́ його велика.
“Then the magicians, the conjurers, the Chaldeans and the diviners came in and I related the dream to them, but they could not make its interpretation known to me.
Це дерево стало велике та си́льне, і вишина́ його сяга́ла до Неба, а його о́бвід — до кінця всієї землі.
“But finally Daniel came in before me, whose name is Belteshazzar according to the name of my god, and in whom is a spirit of the holy gods; and I related the dream to him, saying,
Ві́ття його гарне, плід його великий, а в ньому пожи́ва — для всіх. Під ним знахо́дила собі тінь польова звірина́, а на його галу́ззях ме́шкали пта́хи небесні, і з нього живи́лося кожне тіло.
‘O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, since I know that a spirit of the holy gods is in you and no mystery baffles you, tell me the visions of my dream which I have seen, along with its interpretation.
Бачив я у виді́ннях своєї голови на моєму ложі, аж ось зійшов з неба Сторож Божий та Святий.
‘Now these were the visions in my mind as I lay on my bed: I was looking, and behold, there was a tree in the midst of the earth and its height was great.
І він кликнув із силою, і так проказав: „Зруба́йте це дерево, і повідру́буйте галу́ззя його, позривайте ві́ття його, і порозсипа́йте його плід. Нехай розі́йдеться з-під нього звірина́, а пта́хи — з галу́ззя його́!
‘The tree grew large and became strong
And its height reached to the sky,
And it was visible to the end of the whole earth.

Та позоставте в землі пня його ко́реня, але в пу́тах залізних та мідяни́х, на зеленій польові́й траві. І небесною росою нехай він зро́шується, а його ча́стка — зо звірино́ю на польові́й траві.
‘Its foliage was beautiful and its fruit abundant,
And in it was food for all.
The beasts of the field found shade under it,
And the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches,
And all living creatures fed themselves from it.

Його лю́дське серце змі́нять, і буде да́не йому серце звіри́не, і сім часі́в пере́йдуть над ним.
‘I was looking in the visions in my mind as I lay on my bed, and behold, an angelic watcher, a holy one, descended from heaven.
Через постанову Сторожів Божих це слово, а пові́дженням Святих — ця річ, аж при́йде до того, що пізна́ють живі, що над лю́дським царством панує Всевишній, і кому схоче, дає його, і низько́го з людей ставить над ним“.
‘He shouted out and spoke as follows:
“Chop down the tree and cut off its branches,
Strip off its foliage and scatter its fruit;
Let the beasts flee from under it
And the birds from its branches.

Оцей сон бачив я, цар Навуходоно́сор, а ти, Валтаса́ре, скажи його ро́зв'язку, бо всі мудреці мого царства не можуть сказати мені ро́зв'язки, а ти можеш, бо в тобі Дух Святого Бога“.
“Yet leave the stump with its roots in the ground,
But with a band of iron and bronze around it
In the new grass of the field;
And let him be drenched with the dew of heaven,
And let him share with the beasts in the grass of the earth.

Тоді Даниїл, що ім'я́ йому Валтаса́р, остовпі́в на одну годину, і думки́ його перестра́шили його. Цар заговорив та й сказав: „Валтаса́ре, нехай не страши́ть тебе цей сон та його ро́зв'язка!“ Валтаса́р відповів та й сказав: „Мій пане, на ворогів би твоїх цей сон, а його ро́зв'язка — на твоїх би не́приятелів!

“This sentence is by the decree of the angelic watchers
And the decision is a command of the holy ones,
In order that the living may know
That the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind,
And bestows it on whom He wishes
And sets over it the lowliest of men.”

а ві́ття його гарне, і плід його великий, і в ньому пожи́ва — для всіх, під ним ме́шкала польова́ звірина́, а на його галу́ззях перебували пта́хи небесні, —
‘This is the dream which I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen. Now you, Belteshazzar, tell me its interpretation, inasmuch as none of the wise men of my kingdom is able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able, for a spirit of the holy gods is in you.’
ти, ца́рю, той, що став великий та поту́жний, і твоя великість побільшилася, і сягнула аж до небе́с, а панува́ння твоє — до кі́нців землі.
Daniel Interprets the Vision
“Then Daniel, whose name is Belteshazzar, was appalled for a while as his thoughts alarmed him. The king responded and said, ‘Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its interpretation alarm you.’ Belteshazzar replied, ‘My lord, if only the dream applied to those who hate you and its interpretation to your adversaries!
А що цар бачив Божого Сто́рожа та Святого, який схо́див із небе́с, і сказав: Зрубайте це дерево, і знищте його, та позоставте в землі пня його ко́реня, але в пу́тах залізних та мідяни́х, на зеленій польові́й траві; і небесною росо́ю нехай він зро́шується, а його частка — з польово́ю звірино́ю, аж по́ки пере́йдуть над ним сім часі́в,
‘The tree that you saw, which became large and grew strong, whose height reached to the sky and was visible to all the earth
то ось ро́зв'язка, ца́рю, і це постанова Всевишнього, що сягає на мого пана царя:
and whose foliage was beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in which was food for all, under which the beasts of the field dwelt and in whose branches the birds of the sky lodged —
І тебе ви́женуть від людей, і з польово́ю звірино́ю буде пробува́ння твоє, і дадуть тобі їсти траву, як волам, і з небесної роси тебе зро́сять, і сім часі́в пере́йдуть над тобою, аж поки пізна́єш, що над лю́дським царством панує Всевишній, і дає його тому́, кому хоче.
it is you, O king; for you have become great and grown strong, and your majesty has become great and reached to the sky and your dominion to the end of the earth.
А що сказали позоставити пня ко́реня дерева, — твоє царство позоста́неться тобі, якщо ти пі́знаєш, що панує небо.
‘In that the king saw an angelic watcher, a holy one, descending from heaven and saying, “Chop down the tree and destroy it; yet leave the stump with its roots in the ground, but with a band of iron and bronze around it in the new grass of the field, and let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him share with the beasts of the field until seven periods of time pass over him,”
Тому́, царю, нехай буде до вподо́би моя рада тобі, — зламай же свої гріхи́ справедливістю, а свої провини — милістю для вбогих, щоб твій мир був довготрива́лий“.
this is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king:
Усе це сталося над царем Навуходоно́сором.
that you be driven away from mankind and your dwelling place be with the beasts of the field, and you be given grass to eat like cattle and be drenched with the dew of heaven; and seven periods of time will pass over you, until you recognize that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind and bestows it on whomever He wishes.
На кінці дванадцяти́ місяців прохо́джувався він по царсько́му пала́цу в Вавилоні.
‘And in that it was commanded to leave the stump with the roots of the tree, your kingdom will be assured to you after you recognize that it is Heaven that rules.
Цар заговорив та й сказав: „Чи ж це не вели́чний Вавилон, що я збудував його на дім царства мі́ццю поту́ги своєї та на славу моєї пишноти́?“
‘Therefore, O king, may my advice be pleasing to you: break away now from your sins by doing righteousness and from your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor, in case there may be a prolonging of your prosperity.’
Ще це слово було в у́стах царськи́х, коли з неба впав голос: „Тобі гово́рять, ца́рю Навуходоно́соре: Оце царство відхо́дить від тебе!
The Vision Fulfilled
“All this happened to Nebuchadnezzar the king.
І від людей тебе відлу́чать, і з польово́ю звірино́ю буде пробува́ння твоє, тобі дадуть на ї́жу траву, як волам, і сім часі́в пере́йдуть над тобою, — аж поки не пізна́єш, що над лю́дським царством панує Всевишній, і дає його тому́, кому хоче.“
“Twelve months later he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon.
Тієї хвилини ви́коналося це слово над Навуходоно́сором, і він був відлу́чений від людей, і їв траву, як воли, і його тіло зро́шувалося з небесної роси, аж його во́лос став великий, як пір'я орли́не, а його пазурі́ — як у пта́хів.
“The king reflected and said, ‘Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built as a royal residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?’
„А на кінці́ тих днів я, Навуходоно́сор, звів свої очі до неба, і мій розум вернувся до мене, й я поблагословив Всевишнього, і вічно Живого хвали́в я та сла́вив, що Його панува́ння — панува́ння вічне, а царство Його — з поколі́ння в покоління.
“While the word was in the king’s mouth, a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared: sovereignty has been removed from you,
А всі ме́шканці землі порахо́вані за ніщо́, і Він чинить за Своєю Волею серед небесного ві́йська та ме́шканців землі, і немає ніко́го, хто спроти́вився б Його руці та й сказав би Йому́: Що́ Ти робиш?

Того ча́су верну́вся мій розум до мене, і я вернувся до слави царства свого, і ясність моя верну́лася на ме́не. І шукали мене мої радники та вельможі мої, і над царством своїм я був поста́влений зно́ву, і мені була до́дана дуже велика вели́чність.
“Immediately the word concerning Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled; and he was driven away from mankind and began eating grass like cattle, and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws.
Тепер я, Навуходоно́сор, хвалю́ й звели́чую та сла́влю Небесного Царя, що всі чини Його — правда, а дорога Його — правосу́ддя, а тих, хто ходить у го́рдощах, Він може пони́зити“.
“But at the end of that period, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever;
For His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
And His kingdom endures from generation to generation.
