Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night.

І нарікали на Мойсея та на Аарона всі Ізраїлеві сини. І сказала до них вся громада: „О, якби ми померли були́ в єгипетськім кра́ї, або щоб ми померли були в цій пустині!
And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!
І нащо Господь провадить нас до того кра́ю, щоб нам попа́дати від меча? Жінки́ наші та діти наші стануть здо́биччю... Чи не краще нам верну́тися до Єгипту?“
Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?”
І сказали вони один до о́дного: „Оберімо собі го́лову, та й вертаймось до Єгипту!“
And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”
I впали Мойсей та Аарон на обличчя свої перед усім збором громади Ізраїлевих синів.
Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel.
А Ісу́с, син Нави́нів, та Калев, син Єфуннеїв, із тих, що розвідували той Край, пороздирали одежу свою,
And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes
та й сказали до всієї громади Ізраїлевих синів, говорячи: „Той край, що перейшли́ ми по ньому, щоб розвідати його, край той дуже-дуже хороший!
and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.
Якщо Господь уподо́бає Собі нас, то впровадить нас до того Кра́ю, і дасть його нам, край, який тече молоком та медом.
If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey.
Тільки не бунтуйтесь проти Господа, — і не бійтеся наро́ду того кра́ю, бо вони — хліб для нас! Їхня тінь відійшла від них, а з нами Господь, — не бійтеся їх!
Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.”
І сказала була вся громада, щоб камі́нням закидати їх, та слава Господня появилася в скинії заповіту всім Ізра́їлевим синам...
Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.
І промовив Господь до Мойсея: „Аж доки буде цей наро́д зневажа́ти Мене, і аж доки не будуть вони ві́рувати в Мене, у всі ті озна́ки, що Я учинив був серед нього?
And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them?
Ударю його поразою, і позба́влю його насліддя, а тебе зроблю́ народом більшим і сильнішим від нього“.
I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
І сказав Мойсей до Господа: „І почує Єгипет, що Ти з-посеред нього вивів Своєю силою наро́д цей,
Moses Intercedes for the People
But Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them,

та й скаже до ме́шканців цього кра́ю, які чули, що Ти Господь серед цього наро́ду, що око-в-око являєшся Ти, Господи, а хмара Твоя стоїть над ними, і що Ти ходиш перед ними в стовпі хмари вдень, а в стовпі огню вночі, —
and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O Lord, are in the midst of this people. For you, O Lord, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.
якщо заб'єш Ти цей наро́д, як одну люди́ну, то скажуть ті люди, що чули слух про Тебе, говорячи:
Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say,
Через неспромо́жність Господа впрова́дити той народ до кра́ю, якого Він заприся́г був їм, вигубив їх у пустині.
‘It is because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’
А тепер нехай же звели́читься сила Господня, як Ти наказав був, говорячи:
And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying,
„Господь довготерпели́вий, і багатомилости́вий, Він прощає провину та пере́ступ, і не очистить винного, а карає провину батьків на третіх і на четвертих поколі́ннях“.
‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’
Прости ж провину цього народу через велику милість Свою, як проща́в Ти цьому наро́дові від Єгипту й аж сюди!“
Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.”
А Господь сказав: „Я простив за словом твоїм.
God Promises Judgment
Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, according to your word.
Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, according to your word.
Але, як Я живий, — слава Господня напо́внить увесь оцей край.
But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord,
Тому́ всі ті люди, що бачили славу Мою та озна́ки Мої, що чинив Я в Єгипті та в пустині, але випробо́вували Мене оце десять раз та не слухалися голосу Мого,
none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice,
поправді кажу, — не побачать вони того кра́ю, що Я заприсяг був їхнім батькам. І всі, хто зневажає Мене, не побачать його́!
shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it.
Але раб Мій Калев за те, що з ним був дух інший, і він вико́нував накази Мої, то Я введу́ його до того краю, куди він увійшов був, і пото́мство його оволодіє ним.
But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it.
А амалики́тянин та ханаане́янин сидить у долині. Узавтра оберніться, та й руша́йте на пустиню дорогою Червоного моря!“
Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”
І Господь промовляв до Мойсея й до Ааро́на, говорячи:
And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
„Аж доки цій злій громаді нарікати на Мене? Наріка́ння Ізраїлевих синів, що вони нарікають на Мене, Я чув.
“How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me.
Скажи їм: Живий Я! Мова Господня: Поправді кажу, — як ви говорили до ушей Моїх, так Я зроблю́ вам.
Say to them, ‘As I live, declares the Lord, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you:
У цій пустині попа́дають ваші трупи, та всі перелічені ваші всім вашим числом від віку двадцяти́ літ і вище, що нарікали на Мене.
your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me,
Поправді кажу, — ви не ввійдете до того кра́ю, що Я підносив був на присягу руку Свою, що будете перебувати в нім, — окрім Калева, сина Єфуннеєвого, та Ісуса, сина Нави́нового.
not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
А діти ваші, що про них казали ви: станете здо́биччю ворогові, то впрова́джу Я їх, і пізнають вони цей край, яким ви обри́дили.
But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected.
І ваші власні трупи попа́дають у цій пустині!
But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
А ваші сини будуть блукати на пустині со́рок літ, і відповідатимуть за зраду вашу, аж поки ви́гинуть ваші трупи на пустині.
And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness.
Числом тих днів, що розві́дували ви той край, сорок день, будете ви нести ваші гріхи по року за день — сорок літ, і пізнаєте, що значить бути покинутими Мною!
According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’
Я, Господь, говорив: Поправді кажу, — оце зроблю́ всій цій злій громаді, що змовляється проти Мене: у цій пустині вигинуть, і тут повмирають“.
I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.”
А ті люди, яких Мойсей послав був розві́дати той край, коли вернулися, то зробили, що вся громада нарікала на нього, і пустили злу вістку на той край,
And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land —
то ті люди, що пустили були злу вістку на той край, повмирали від пора́зи перед Господнім лицем.
the men who brought up a bad report of the land — died by plague before the Lord.
А Ісус, син Нави́нів, та Калев, син Єфуннеїв, жили́ з тих людей, що ходили розвідати той край.
Of those men who went to spy out the land, only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive.
І говорив Мойсей ці слова́ до всіх Ізраїлевих синів, — і наро́д був у тяжкій жало́бі!
Israel Defeated in Battle
When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly.

І повставали вони рано вранці, та й повихо́дили на верхі́в'я гори, говорячи: „Ось ми, — і ми пі́демо до місця, що Господь був сказав, бо ми прогрішили“.
And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, “Here we are. We will go up to the place that the Lord has promised, for we have sinned.”
А Мойсей сказав: „Чому́ ж ви переступаєте нака́з Господній? Таж це не вдасться!
But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the Lord, when that will not succeed?
Не виходьте, бо Господь не серед вас, а то бу́дете побиті своїми ворогами.
Do not go up, for the Lord is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies.
Бо там перед вами амалики́тянин і ханаане́янин, і ви попа́даєте від меча, бо ви відвернулися від Господа, і не буде Господь із вами“.
For there the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.”
Але вони осмі́лилися вийти на верхів'я гори, а ковче́г свідоцтва Господнього та Мойсей не ру́шилися з-посеред табо́ру.
But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed out of the camp.
