Rank in the Kingdom
At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
Він же дитину покликав, і поставив її серед них,
And He called a child to Himself and set him before them,
та й сказав: „Поправді кажу́ вам: коли не наве́рнетесь, і не станете, як ті діти, — не вві́йдете в Царство Небесне!
and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Отже, хто впоко́риться, як дитина оця, той найбільший у Царстві Небеснім.
“Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
І хто при́йме таку дитину одну в Моє Ймення, той приймає Мене.
“And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me;
Хто ж споку́сить одне з цих мали́х, що вірують в Мене, то краще б тако́му було, коли б жо́рно млино́ве на шию йому почепи́ти, — і його потопи́ти в морські́й глибині́.
but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
Від споку́с горе світові, — бо мусять спокуси прийти; надто горе люди́ні, що від неї прихо́дить споку́са!
Stumbling Blocks
“Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!
Коли тільки рука твоя, чи нога твоя спокуша́є тебе, — відітни її й кинь від себе: краще тобі увійти в життя одноруким або одноногим, ніж з обома руками чи з обома ногами бути вкиненому в огонь вічний.
“If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire.
І коли твоє око тебе́ спокушає — його ви́бери й кинь від себе: краще тобі однооким ввійти в життя, ніж з обома очима бути вкиненому до геєнни огне́нної.
“If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be cast into the fiery hell.
Стережіться, щоб ви не погордували ані одним із мали́х цих; кажу́ бо Я вам, що їхні Анголи́ повсякчасно бачать у небі обличчя Мого Отця, що на небі.
“See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven.
Син бо Лю́дський прийшов, щоб спасти́ загинуле.
[“For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.]
Як вам здається: коли має який чоловік сто овець, а одна з них заблу́дить, то чи він не покине дев'ятдесятьо́х і дев'ятьо́х у гора́х, і не пі́де шукати заблу́длої?
Ninety-nine Plus One
“What do you think? If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying?
І коли пощасти́ть відшукати її, поправді кажу́ вам, що радіє за неї він більше, аніж за дев'ятдесятьо́х і дев'ятьо́х незаблудлих.
“If it turns out that he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray.
Так волі нема Отця вашого, що на небі, щоб загинув один із цих мали́х.
“So it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones perish.
А коли прогріши́ться твій брат проти тебе, іди й йому ви́кажи поміж тобою та ним самим; як тебе він послухає, — ти придбав свого брата.
Discipline and Prayer
“If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.
А коли не послухає він, то візьми з собою ще одно́го чи двох, щоб „справа всіляка стверди́лась уста́ми двох чи трьох свідків.“
“But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED.
А коли не послухає їх, — скажи Церкві; коли ж не послухає й Церкви, — хай бу́де тобі, як пога́нин і ми́тник!
“If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
Поправді кажу вам: Що́ тільки зв'яжете на землі, зв'я́зане буде на небі, і що тільки розв'я́жете на землі, розв'язане буде на небі.
“Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.
Ще поправді кажу́ вам, що коли б двоє з вас на землі погоди́лись про всяку річ, то коли вони будуть просити за неї, — станеться їм від Мого Отця, що на небі!
“Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.
Бо де двоє чи троє в Ім'я́ Моє зі́брані, — там Я серед них“.
“For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”
Петро приступив тоді та запитався Його: „Господи, — скільки разів брат мій може згріши́ти проти мене, а я маю прощати йому? Чи до семи раз?“
Forgiveness
Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”
Ісус промовляє до нього: „Не кажу тобі — до семи раз, але аж до семидесяти раз по семи!
Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.
Тим то Царство Небесне подібне одно́му царе́ві, що захотів обраху́нок зробити з своїми рабами.
“For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves.
Коли ж він почав обрахо́вувати, то йому привели́ одно́го, що винен був десять тисяч тала́нтів.
“When he had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him.
А що він не мав із чо́го віддати, наказав пан продати його, і його дружи́ну та діти, і все, що́ він мав, — і заплатити.
“But since he did not have the means to repay, his lord commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made.
Тоді раб той упав до ніг, і вклонявся йому та благав: „Потерпи мені, — я віддам тобі все!“
“So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.’
І змилосе́рдився пан над рабом тим, — і звільнив його, і простив йому борг.
“And the lord of that slave felt compassion and released him and forgave him the debt.
А як вийшов той раб, то спіткав він одно́го з своїх співтова́ришів, що був винен йому сто динаріїв. І, схопи́вши його, він душив та казав: „Віддай, що ти винен!“
“But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe.’
А товариш його впав у ноги йому, і благав його, кажучи: „Потерпи мені, — і я віддам тобі!“
“So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you.’
Та той не схотів, а пішов і всадив до в'язни́ці його, — аж поки він боргу не ве́рне.
“But he was unwilling and went and threw him in prison until he should pay back what was owed.
Як побачили ж товариші його те, що сталося, то засмутилися дуже, і прийшли й розповіли своє́му панові все, що було́.
“So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their lord all that had happened.
Тоді пан його кличе його, та й говорить до нього: „Рабе лукавий, — я простив був тобі ввесь той борг, бо просив ти мене.
“Then summoning him, his lord said to him, ‘You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.
Чи й тобі не нале́жало зми́луватись над своїм співтова́ришем, як і я над тобою був зми́лувався?“
‘Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?’
І прогнівався пан його, — і ката́м його видав, аж поки йому не віддасть всього боргу.
“And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him.
