Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them,
І прийшли ось до Нього, несучи розсла́бленого, якого не́сли четверо.
four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat.
А що через наро́д до Ньо́го набли́зитися не могли, то стелю розкри́ли, де Він був, і пробравши, звісили ложе, що на ньому лежав розсла́блений.
They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus.
А Ісус, віру їхню побачивши, каже розсла́бленому: „Відпускаються, сину, гріхи тобі!“
Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.”
Там же сиділи дехто з книжників, і в серцях своїх ду́мали:
But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves,
„Чого Він говорить отак? Зневажає Він Бога. Хто може прощати гріхи, окрім Бога Само́го?“
“What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”
І зараз Ісус відчув Духом Своїм, що вони так міркують собі, і сказав їм: „Що́ таке ви в серцях своїх ду́маєте?
Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts?
Що́ легше: сказати розсла́бленому: „Гріхи відпускаються тобі“, чи сказати: „Уставай, візьми ложе своє та й ходи“?
Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’?
Але щоб ви знали, що Син Лю́дський має вла́ду прощати гріхи на землі“, — каже розсла́бленому:
„Тобі Я наказую: Уставай, візьми ложе своє, та й іди у свій дім!“
“Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”
І той устав, і негайно взяв ложе, — і вийшов перед усіма́, так що всі дивувались і сла́вили Бога, й казали: „Ніко́ли такого не бачили ми!“
And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!”
І вийшов над море Він знов. А ввесь на́товп до Нього прихо́див, — і Він їх навчав.
Jesus Calls Levi (Matthew)
Then Jesus went out to the lakeshore again and taught the crowds that were coming to him.
А коли Він прохо́див, то побачив Леві́я Алфі́євого, що сидів на ми́тниці, і каже йому: „Іди за Мною!“ Той устав, і пішов услід за Ним.
As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Levi got up and followed him.
Коли ж Він сидів при столі́ в його домі, то багато ми́тників і грішників сиділи з Ісусом та з у́чнями Його; бо було їх багато, і вони ходили за Ним.
Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.)
Як побачили ж книжники та фарисеї, що Він їсть із грішниками та з ми́тниками, то сказали до учнів Його: „Чому́ то Він їсть із ми́тниками та з грішниками?“
А Ісус, як почув, промовляє до них: „Лі́каря не потребують здорові, а слабі. Я не прийшов кликати праведних, але грішників (на покая́ння).“
When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor — sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”
А учні Іванові та фарисейські по́стили. І приходять вони, та й говорять до Нього: „Чому́ учні Іванові та фарисейські по́стять, а учні Твої не по́стять?“
A Discussion about Fasting
Once when John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t your disciples fast like John’s disciples and the Pharisees do?”
Ісус же промовив до них: „Хіба по́стити можуть гості весільні, поки з ними ще є молоди́й? Доки мають вони молодо́го з собою, то по́стити не можуть.
Jesus replied, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. They can’t fast while the groom is with them.
Але при́йдуть ті дні, коли заберуть молодо́го від них, — то й по́стити бу́дуть вони за тих днів.
But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
І не пришива́є ніхто до старої одежі ла́тки з сукна сирово́го, а як ні, то край ла́тки ново́ї оді́рветься там від старо́го, — і дірка стане ще гірша.
“Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth? For the new patch would shrink and rip away from the old cloth, leaving an even bigger tear than before.
І ніхто не вливає вина молодого в старі бурдюки́, а то попрориває вино бурдюки, — і вино й бурдюки пропаду́ть, а вливають вино молоде до нови́х бурдюкі́в“.
“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins.”
І сталось, як Він перехо́див лана́ми в суботу, Його учні дорогою йшли, та й стали коло́сся зривати.
A Discussion about the Sabbath
One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat.
Фарисеї ж казали Йому: Подивись, чому́ роблять у суботу вони, чого не годи́ться?“
But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”
А Він їм відказав: „Чи ж ви не читали ніко́ли, що зробив був Давид, як потребу він мав та сам зголоднів був і ті, що були з ним?
Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
Як він увійшов був до Божого дому — за первосвященика Авіята́ра, — і спожив хліби показні́, яких їсти не можна було́, — тільки священикам, — і дав він і тим, хто був із ним?“
He went into the house of God (during the days when Abiathar was high priest) and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his companions.”
І сказав Він до них: „Субота постала для чоловіка, а не чоловік для суботи,
Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.
