Jesus went out from there and came into His hometown; and His disciples followed Him.

Як настала ж субота, Він навчати почав у синаго́зі. І багато-хто, чувши, дивуватися стали й питали: „Звідки в Нього оце? І що за мудрість, що да́на Йому? І що за чуда, що стаються руками Його?
When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands?
Хіба ж Він не те́сля, син Маріїн, брат же Якову, і Йо́сипу, і Юді та Си́монові? А се́стри Його хіба тут не між нами?“ І вони спокуша́лися Ним.
“Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?” And they took offense at Him.
А Ісус їм сказав: „Пророка нема без пошани, — хіба тільки в вітчи́зні своїй, та в родині своїй, та в домі своїм“.
Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household.”
І Він тут учинити не міг чуда жодного, тільки деяких хворих, руки поклавши на них, уздорови́в.
And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
І Він дивувавсь їх невірству. І ходив Він по се́лах навкру́г та навчав.
And He wondered at their unbelief.
And He was going around the villages teaching.

The Twelve Sent Out
And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits;
І звелів їм нічого в дорогу не брати, крім па́лиці тільки самої: ні то́рби, ні хліба, ані мідякі́в у свій че́рес,
and He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff — no bread, no bag, no money in their belt —
а ходити в санда́лях, „і двох убрань не носити“.
but to wear sandals; and He added, “Do not put on two tunics.”
І промовив до них: „Коли ви де вві́йдете в дім, залиша́йтеся там, аж поки не вийдете звідти.
And He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town.
А як місто яке вас не при́йме, і не послухають вас, то, виходячи звідти, обтрусіть порох, що в вас під ногами, на сві́дчення супроти них. Поправді кажу́ вам, — легше бу́де Содо́му й Гомо́ррі дня судного, аніж місту тому́!“
“Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them.”
І вийшли вони, і проповідували, щоб ка́ялися.
They went out and preached that men should repent.
І багато виго́нили де́монів, і оливою хворих багато нама́щували — і вздоровляли.
And they were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.
І прочув про Ісуса цар І́род, — бо ім'я́ Його стало зага́льно відо́ме, — і сказав, що то Іван Христитель із мертвих воскрес, і тому тво́ряться чу́да від нього.
John’s Fate Recalled
And King Herod heard of it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, “John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him.”
Інші впевня́ли, що Ілля Він, а знов інші казали, що пророк, або як один із пророків.
But others were saying, “He is Elijah.” And others were saying, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.”
А Ірод, прочувши, сказав: „Іван, якому я голову стяв був, — оце він воскрес!“
But when Herod heard of it, he kept saying, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen!”
Той бо Ірод, пославши, схопи́в був Івана, і в в'язниці закув його, через Іродія́ду, дружи́ну брата свого Пилипа, бо він одружи́вся був із нею.
For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her.
Бо Іван казав Іродові: „Не годи́ться тобі мати за дружину жінку брата свого!“
For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
А Іродія́да лю́тилась на нього, і хотіла йому смерть заподіяти, та не могла.
Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so;
Бо Ірод боявся Івана, знавши, що він муж праведний і святий, і беріг його. І, його слухаючи, він дуже бенте́жився, але слухав його залюбки́.
for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; but he used to enjoy listening to him.
Та настав день догі́дний, коли дня наро́дження Ірод справляв був бенке́та вельмо́жам своїм, і тисячникам, і галілейській старши́ні,
A strategic day came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his lords and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee;
і коли прийшла дочка́ тієї Іродіяди, і танцювала, і сподо́балася Іродові та присутнім із ним при столі, — тоді цар промовив до дівчини: „Проси в мене, чого хочеш, — і дам я тобі!“
and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.”
І поклявся він їй: „Чого тільки від ме́не попросиш, то дам я тобі, — хоча б і півцарства мого́!“
And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to half of my kingdom.”
Вона ж вийшла, і спиталася матері своєї: „Чого маю просити?“ А та відказала: „Голови Івана Христителя“.
And she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.”
І зараз квапли́во вернулась вона до царя, і просила, говорячи: „Я хочу, щоб дав ти негайно мені на полу́миску голову Івана Христителя!“
Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
І засмутився цар, але через клятву й з-за тих, що з ним були́ при столі́, не схотів їй відмовити.
And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her.
І цар зараз послав вояка́, і звелів прине́сти Іванову голову.
Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and had him beheaded in the prison,
І пішов він, і стяв у в'язниці Івана, і приніс його го́лову на полу́мискові, і дівчаті віддав, а дівча віддало́ її своїй матері.
and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.
А коли його учні зачули, то прийшли, і взяли його тіло, і до гро́бу поклали його.
When his disciples heard about this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.
І посхо́дилися до Ісуса апо́столи, і розповіли́ Йому все, — як багато зробили вони, і як багато навчили.
The apostles gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught.
І сказав Він до них: „Ідіть осібно самі до безлю́дного місця, та трохи спочиньте“. Бо багато народу прихо́дило та відбувало, аж навіть не мали коли й поживитись.
And He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while.” (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.)
І відпливли́ вони чо́вном окремо до місця безлю́дного.
They went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves.
І побачили їх, коли пли́нули, і багато-хто їх розпізнали. І пі́шки побігли туди з усіх міст, та й їх ви́передили.
Five Thousand Fed
The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them.
І, як вийшов Ісус, Він побачив багато наро́ду, — і зми́лувався над ними, бо були, „немов вівці, що не мають пастуха“. І зачав їх багато навчати.
When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.
І, як минуло вже ча́су доволі, підійшли Його учні до Нього та й кажуть: „Це місце безлю́дне, а година вже пізня.
When it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and said, “This place is desolate and it is already quite late;
Відпусти їх, — нехай пі́дуть в оса́ди та се́ла близькі́, і куплять собі чого їсти“.
send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
А Він відповів і сказав їм: „Дайте їсти їм ви́“. Вони ж відказали Йому: „Чи ми маємо піти та хліба купити на двісті дина́ріїв, і дати їм їсти?“
But He answered them, “You give them something to eat!” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread and give them something to eat?”
А Він їх запитав: „Скільки маєте хліба? Ідіть, побачте!“ І розізнавши, сказали: „П'ять хлібі́в та дві рибі“.
And He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go look!” And when they found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”
І звелів їм усіх на зеленій траві посадити один біля о́дного.
And He commanded them all to sit down by groups on the green grass.
І розсілись рядами вони, по сто та по п'ятдеся́т.
They sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties.
І Він узяв п'ять хлібів та дві рибі, споглянув на небо, поблагословив, і поламав ті хліби́, і дав учням, щоб клали перед ними, і дві рибі на всіх поділив.
And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all.
А з кусків позосталих та з риб назбирали дванадцять повних кошів.
and they picked up twelve full baskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish.
А тих, хто хліб споживав, було тисяч із п'ять чоловіка!
There were five thousand men who ate the loaves.
І зараз звелів Своїм у́чням до чо́вна сідати, і на то́й бік попли́нути до Віфсаїди, раніше Його, поки Сам Він відпустить наро́д.
Jesus Walks on the Water
Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away.
І Він їх відпустив, та й пішов помолитись на го́ру.
After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.
А як вечір настав, чо́вен був серед моря, а Він Сам один на землі.
When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land.
Коли ж Він побачив, як вони веслува́нням мордуються, — бо вітер їм був супроти́вний, — о четвертій сторо́жі вночі підійшов Він до них, по морю йдучи́, і хотів їх минути.
Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them.
А вони, як побачили, що йде Він по морю, поду́мали, що то мара́, та й стали кричати,
But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;
бо Його всі побачили та налякались. А Він зараз до них обізвався й сказав їм: „Будьте смілі, — це Я, не лякайтесь!“
for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, “Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid.”
І ввійшов Він у чо́вен до них, і вітер затих. А вони здивувалися ду́же в собі,
Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished,
бо не зрозуміли чуда про хліби́, бо серце їхнє було затверділе.
for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.
Перепливши ж вони, прибули́ в землю Генісаре́тську й прича́лили.
Healing at Gennesaret
When they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.
І, як вони повихо́дили з чо́вна, люди зараз пізнали Його,
When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,
і порозбігались по всій тій околиці, і стали на ложах недужих прино́сити, де тільки прочули були, що Він є.
and ran about that whole country and began to carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick, to the place they heard He was.
І куди тільки Він прибував — до сіл, чи до міст, чи до осе́ль, — клали недужих на майда́нах, і благали Його, щоб могли доторкну́тись хоч краю одежі Його. І хто тільки до Нього дото́ркувався, той був уздоро́влений!
Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured.
