Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
Now it happened that He was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain.

А деякі з фарисеїв сказали: „На́що робите те, чого не годи́ться робити в суботу?“
But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”
І промовив Ісус їм у відповідь: „Хіба ви не читали того, що зробив був Давид, коли сам зголодні́в, також ті, хто був із ним?
And Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,
Як він увійшов був до Божого дому, і, взявши хліби́ показні́, яких їсти не можна було́, тільки самим священикам, споживав, і дав тим, хто був із ним?“
how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the consecrated bread which is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?”
І сказав Він до них: „Син Лю́дський — Господь і суботі!“
And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
І сталось, як в іншу суботу зайшов Він до синагоги й навчав, знахо́дився там чоловік, що прави́ця йому була всохла.
On another Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.
А книжники та фарисеї вважали, чи в суботу того не вздоро́вить, щоб знайти проти Нього оска́рження.
The scribes and the Pharisees were watching Him closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him.
А Він знав думки їхні, і сказав чоловікові, що мав суху руку: „Підведися, і стань посере́дині!“ Той підвівся — і став.
But He knew what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and come forward!” And he got up and came forward.
Ісус же промовив до них: „Запитаю Я вас: Що годи́ться в суботу — робити добре, чи робити лихе, душу спасти́, чи згубити?“
And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?”
І, позирну́вши на всіх них, сказав чоловікові: „Простягни свою руку!“ Той зробив, — і рука його стала здорова!
After looking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did so; and his hand was restored.
А вони перепо́внились лютістю, і один з о́дним змовля́лись, що́ робити з Ісусом?
But they themselves were filled with rage, and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.
І сталось, що ча́су того Він вийшов на го́ру молитися, і перебув цілу ніч на молитві до Бога.
Choosing the Twelve
It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.
А коли настав день, покликав Він у́чнів Своїх, і обрав із них Дванадцятьо́х, яких і апо́столами Він назвав:
And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles:
Си́мона, якого й Петром Він назвав, і Андрія, брата його, Якова й Івана, Пилипа й Варфоломі́я,
Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew;
Матвія й Хому́, Якова Алфі́євого й Си́мона, зва́ного Зило́том,
and Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot;
Юду Якового, й Юду Іскаріо́тського, що й зрадником став.
Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Як зійшов Він із ними, то спинився на рівному місці, також на́товп густий Його у́чнів, і бе́зліч людей з усіє́ї Юдеї та з Єрусалиму, і з примо́рського Тиру й Сидо́ну,
Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was a large crowd of His disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon,
що посхо́дилися, щоб послухати Його та вздорови́тися із неду́гів своїх, також ті, хто від ду́хів нечистих стражда́в, — і вони вздоровля́лися.
who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being cured.
Увесь же наро́д намагався бода́й доторкну́тись до Ньо́го, бо від Ньо́го вихо́дила сила, і всіх вздоровляла.
And all the people were trying to touch Him, for power was coming from Him and healing them all.
А Він, звівши очі на у́чнів Своїх, говорив: „Блаженні убогі, — Царство Боже бо ваше.
The Beatitudes
And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
Блаженні голодні тепер, бо ви нагодо́вані бу́дете. Блаженні засму́чені зараз, бо вті́шитесь ви.
“Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
Блаженні ви бу́дете, коли люди знена́видять вас, і коли прожену́ть вас, і ганьби́тимуть, і знесла́влять, як зле, ім'я́ ваше за Лю́дського Сина.
“Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.
Ра́ді́йте того дня й веселіться, нагоро́да бо ваша велика на небеса́х. Бо так само чинили пророкам батьки́ їхні.
“Be glad in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For in the same way their fathers used to treat the prophets.
Горе ж вам, багатія́м, бо втіху свою ви вже маєте.
“But woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving your comfort in full.
Горе вам, тепер ситим, бо зазнаєте го́лоду ви. Горе вам, що тепер потішаєтеся, бо бу́дете ви сумувати та плакати.
“Woe to you who are well-fed now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
Горе вам, як усі люди про вас говоритимуть добре, бо так само чинили фальшивим пророкам батьки́ їхні!
“Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way.
А вам, хто слухає, Я кажу́: „Любіть своїх ворогів, добро робіть тим, хто нена́видить вас.
“But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
Благословляйте тих, хто вас проклинає, і моліться за тих, хто кривду вам чинить.
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
Хто вдарить тебе по щоці́, підстав йому й другу, а хто хоче плаща твого взяти, — не забороняй і сорочки.
“Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either.
І кожному, хто в тебе просить — подай, а від того, хто твоє забирає, — назад не жадай.
“Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.
І як бажаєте, щоб вам люди чинили, так само чиніть їм і ви.
“Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.
А коли любите тих, хто любить вас, — яка вам за те ла́ска? Люблять бо й грішники тих, хто їх любить.
“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
І коли добре чините тим, хто добро чинить вам, — яка вам за те ла́ска? Бо те саме і грішники роблять.
“If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
А коли позичаєте тим, що й від них сподіваєтесь взяти, — яка вам за те ла́ска? Позичають бо й грішники грішникам, щоб оде́ржати стільки ж.
“If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount.
Тож любіть своїх ворогів, робіть добро, позичайте, не ждучи нічого назад, — і ваша за це нагоро́да великою буде, і синами Всеви́шнього станете ви, — добрий бо Він до невдячних і злих!
“But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.
Будьте ж милосердні, як і Отець ваш милосердний!
“Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Також не судіть, щоб не су́джено й вас; і не осуджуйте, щоб і вас не осу́джено; прощайте, то простять і вам.
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned.
Давайте — і дадуть вам; мірою доброю, нато́птаною, стру́снутою й перепо́вненою вам у подо́лок дадуть. Бо якою ви мірою міряєте, такою відмі́ряють вам“.
“Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure — pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”
Розповів також при́казку їм: „Чи ж може водити сліпого сліпий? Хіба не оби́два в яму впаду́ть?
And He also spoke a parable to them: “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit?
Учень не більший за вчителя; але, удоскона́лившись, кожен буде, як учитель його.
“A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.
Чого́ ж в оці брата свого ти за́скалку бачиш, коло́ди ж у вла́сному оці не чуєш?
“Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
Як ти можеш сказати до брата свого: Давай, брате, я за́скалку вийму із ока твого́, сам колоди, що в оці твоїм, не вбача́ючи? Лицеміре, — вийми перше колоду із вла́сного ока, а потім побачиш, як вийняти за́скалку з ока брата твого́!
“Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
Нема доброго дерева, що родило б злий плід, ані дерева злого, що родило б плід добрий.
“For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit.
Кожне ж дерево з пло́ду свого́ пізнає́ться. Не збирають бо фіґ із терни́ни, винограду ж на гло́ду не рвуть.
“For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush.
Добра люди́на із доброї скарбни́ці серця добре вино́сить, а лиха із лихої вино́сить лихе. Бо чим серце напо́внене, те говорять уста́ його!
“The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.
Що звете́ ви Мене: „Господи, Господи“, та не робите того, що Я говорю́?
Builders and Foundations
“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
Скажу́ вам, до ко́го подібний усякий, хто до Мене приходить та слів Моїх слухає, і виконує їх :
“Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like:
Той подібний тому чоловікові, що, будуючи дім, він гли́боко ви́копав, і основу на камінь поклав. Коли ж зли́ва настала, вода кинулася на той дім, — та однак не змогла захитати його, бо збудований добре він був!
he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
А хто слухає та не виконує, той подібний тому́ чоловікові, що свій дім збудував на землі без основи. І напе́рла на нього ріка, — і зараз упав він, і велика була́ того дому руїна!“
“But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”
