And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
виказуючи та доводячи, що мусів Христос постраждати й воскре́снути з мертвих, і що Христос Той — Ісус, про Якого „я вам проповідую“.
explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.”
І ввірували дехто з них і до Павла та до Сили пристали, — безліч побожних із ге́лленів та немало з шляхе́тних жінок.
And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women.
А невірні юдеї були запалилися за́здрістю, і якихсь негідних людей назбирали на вулицях, учинили збіго́висько та й бунтували те місто, а набі́гши на хату Ясо́нову, шукали апо́столів, щоб до на́товпу вивести їх.
А як їх не знайшли, потягли до начальників міста Ясо́на та декого з братті, кричачи́: „Ті, що світ сколотили, — і сюди ось вони поприхо́дили!
And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also,
А Ясон їх до себе прийняв. Вони всі проти наказів кесаря чинять, гово́рячи, ніби інший є цар — Ісус“.
and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”
І вони зворохо́били наро́д та начальників міста, що слухали це.
And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard these things.
Але, узявши поруку з Ясо́на та з інших, вони їх відпустили.
And when they had taken money as security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
А брати відіслали негайно вночі Павла й Силу до Ве́рії. І, прибувши вони, пішли в синагогу юдейську.
Ці були шляхетні́ші за солу́нян, — і слова́ прийняли з повним за́палом, і Писа́ння досліджували день-у-день, чи та́к воно є.
Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Berea also, they came there too, agitating and stirring up the crowds.
Тоді браття негайно Павла відпустили, щоб до моря йшов; а Сила та Тимофій позоста́лися там.
Then the brothers immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and Timothy remained there.
А ті, що Павла́ відпроваджували, провели́ його аж до Ате́н, а прийнявши нака́за про Силу та Тимофія, щоб до нього вернулися якнайшвидше, відбули́.
Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and after receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed.
Як Павло ж їх чекав у в Ате́нах, у ньо́му кипів його дух, як бачив це місто, повне ідолів.

So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.
А дехто з філо́софів епікуре́їв та сто́їків сперечалися з ним. Одні говорили: „Що́ то хоче сказати оцей пустомо́в?“ А інші: „Здається, він проповідник чужих богів“, бо він їм звіща́в Єва́нгелію про Ісуса й воскре́сення.
Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, “What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities” — because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection.
І, взявши його, повели в ареопа́г та й казали: „Чи можемо знати, що́ то є ця наука нова́, яку проповідуєш ти?
And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting?
Бо чудне́ щось вкладаєш до наших вух. Отже хочемо знати, що́ то значити має?“
For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.”
А всі ате́няни та захожі чужи́нці нічим іншим радніш не займалися, як аби щось нове́ говорити чи слухати.
Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.
Тоді Павло став посе́редині ареопа́гу й промовив: „Му́жі ате́нські! Із усьо́го я бачу, що ви дуже побожні.

Бо, проходячи та оглядаючи свя́тощі ваші, я знайшов також же́ртівника, що на ньому написано: „Незнаному Богові“. Ось Того, Кого навмання́ ви шануєте, Того я проповідую вам.
For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.
Бог, що створив світ і все, що в ньому, бувши Господом неба й землі, проживає не в хра́мах, рукою збудова́них,
і Він не вимагає служі́ння рук лю́дських, ніби в чо́мусь Він мав би потребу, бо Сам дає всім і життя, і дихання, і все.
nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
І ввесь лю́дський рід Він з одно́го створив, щоб замешкати всю поверхню землі, і призна́чив окреслені до́би й границі заме́шкання їх,
And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place,
щоб Бога шукали вони, чи Його не відчують і не зна́йдуть, хоч Він недалеко від кожного з нас.
that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,
Бо ми в Нім живемо́, і рухаємось, і існуємо, як і деякі з ваших поетів казали: „Навіть рід ми Його!“
Отож, бувши Божим тим родом, не повинні ми ду́мати, що Божество́ подібне до золота, або срі́бла, чи до каменю, твору мистецтва чи лю́дської ви́гадки.
Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man.
Не зважаючи ж Бог на часи невідо́мости, ось тепер усім лю́дям наказує, щоб скрізь ка́ялися,
The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
бо Він ви́значив день, коли хоче судити поправді ввесь світ через Мужа, що Його наперед Він поставив, і Він подав до́каза всім, із мертвих Його воскресивши“.
because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
Як почули ж вони про воскре́сення мертвих, то одні насміхатися стали, а інші казали: „Про це бу́демо слухати тебе іншим ра́зом“.
Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. But others said, “We will hear you again about this.”
