Paul’s Defense before the Jews
“Brethren and fathers, hear my defense which I now offer to you.”
“Brethren and fathers, hear my defense which I now offer to you.”
Як зачули ж вони, що до них він говорить єврейською мовою, то тиша ще більша настала. А він промовляв:
And when they heard that he was addressing them in the Hebrew dialect, they became even more quiet; and he said,
„Я юде́янин, що родився в кілікі́йському Та́рсі, а ви́хований у цім місті, у ніг Гамалії́ла докладно навчений Зако́ну отці́в; горли́вець я Божий, як і всі ви сьогодні.
“I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated under Gamaliel, strictly according to the law of our fathers, being zealous for God just as you all are today.
Переслідував я аж до смерти цю путь, і в'язав, і до в'язниці вкидав чоловіків і жінок,
“I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and putting both men and women into prisons,
як засві́дчить про мене первосвященик та вся старши́на. Я від них був узяв навіть листи́ на братів, і пішов до Дама́ску, щоб тамте́шніх зв'язати й приве́сти до Єрусалиму на кару.
as also the high priest and all the Council of the elders can testify. From them I also received letters to the brethren, and started off for Damascus in order to bring even those who were there to Jerusalem as prisoners to be punished.
І сталося, як у дорозі я був, і наближа́всь до Дамаску опі́вдня, то ось мене нагло осяяло світло велике з неба!
“But it happened that as I was on my way, approaching Damascus about noontime, a very bright light suddenly flashed from heaven all around me,
І я повалився на землю, і голос почув, що мені говорив: „Савле, Савле, — чому́ ти Мене переслідуєш?“
and I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’
А я запитав: „Хто Ти, Господи?“ А Він мені відказав: „Я Ісус Назаряни́н, що Його переслідуєш ти“.
“And I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.’
А ті, що зо мною були́, правда, бачили світло, але не почули вони того голосу, що мені говорив.
“And those who were with me saw the light, to be sure, but did not understand the voice of the One who was speaking to me.
А я запитав: „Що́ я, Господи, маю робити?“ Господь же до мене промовив: „Уставай та й іди до Дамаску, а там тобі скажуть про все, що тобі призна́чено робити“.
“And I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Get up and go on into Damascus, and there you will be told of all that has been appointed for you to do.’
А від ясности світла того невидю́щим я став. І присутні зо мною за руку мене повели́, і до Дамаску прибув я.
“But since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me and came into Damascus.
А один муж Ана́ній, у Зако́ні побожний, що добре свідо́цтво про нього дають усі юдеї в Дамаску,
“A certain Ananias, a man who was devout by the standard of the Law, and well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there,
до мене прибув, і, ставши, промовив мені: „Савле брате, — стань видю́щий!“ І я хвилі тієї побачив його.
came to me, and standing near said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very time I looked up at him.
І озвавсь він до мене: „Бог отців наших вибрав тебе, щоб ти волю Його зрозумів, і щоб бачив ти Праведника, і почув голос із уст Його.
“And he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will and to see the Righteous One and to hear an utterance from His mouth.
Бо бу́деш ти свідком Йому перед усіма людьми́ про оте, що ти бачив та чув!
‘For you will be a witness for Him to all men of what you have seen and heard.
А тепер чого гаєшся? Уставай й охристися, і обмий гріхи свої, прикликавши Ймення Його!“
‘Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’
І сталось, як вернувся я в Єрусалим, і молився у храмі, то в захо́плення впав я,
“It happened when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, that I fell into a trance,
і побачив Його, що до мене сказав: „Поспіши, і піди хутчій з Єрусалиму, бо не приймуть свідо́цтва твого про Мене“.
and I saw Him saying to me, ‘Make haste, and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about Me.’
А я відказав: „Самі вони, Господи, знають, що я до в'язниць садови́в та бив по синагогах отих, хто вірував у Тебе.
“And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves understand that in one synagogue after another I used to imprison and beat those who believed in You.
А коли лилась кров Твого свідка Степа́на, то сам я стояв та вбивство його похваляв, і одежу вбивців його сторожи́в“.
‘And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was being shed, I also was standing by approving, and watching out for the coats of those who were slaying him.’
Але Він до мене промовив: „Іди, бо пошлю Я далеко тебе, — до поган!“
“And He said to me, ‘Go! For I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”
І аж до слова цього його слухали. Аж ось підне́сли вони голос свій, гукаючи: „Геть такого з землі, бо жити йому не годи́ться!“
They listened to him up to this statement, and then they raised their voices and said, “Away with such a fellow from the earth, for he should not be allowed to live!”
І як вони верещали, і одежу шпурля́ли, і кидали порох у повітря,
And as they were crying out and throwing off their cloaks and tossing dust into the air,
то звелів тисяцький у фортецю його відвести́, і звелів бичува́нням його допитати, щоб довідатися, з якої причини на нього вони так кричали.
the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, stating that he should be examined by scourging so that he might find out the reason why they were shouting against him that way.
І як його розтягли́ для ремінних бичів, то Павло сказав сотникові, що стояв: „Хіба бичува́ти дозволено вам громадянина римського та ще й незасу́дженого?“
But when they stretched him out with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman and uncondemned?”
Якже сотник це почув, то подався до тисяцького, і завідо́мив, говорячи: „Що́ хочеш робити? Бож ри́млянин цей чоловік!“
When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and told him, saying, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman.”
Підійшов тоді тисяцький, та й поспитався його: „Скажи мені, чи ти ри́млянин?“ А він: „Так!“ відказав.
The commander came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?” And he said, “Yes.”
Відповів на те тисяцький: „За великі гро́ші громадянство оце я набув“. А Павло відказав: „А я в нім і родився!“
The commander answered, “I acquired this citizenship with a large sum of money.” And Paul said, “But I was actually born a citizen.”
І відступили негайно від нього оті, що хотіли допи́тувати його. І злякався тисяцький, довідавшись, що той ри́млянин, і що він ізв'язав був його.
Therefore those who were about to examine him immediately let go of him; and the commander also was afraid when he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had put him in chains.
А другого дня, бажавши довідатись правди, у чо́му юдеї його оскаржа́ють, він звільнив його та звелів, щоб зібра́лися первосвященики та ввесь синедріо́н. І він вивів Павла, і поставив його перед ними.
But on the next day, wishing to know for certain why he had been accused by the Jews, he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the Council to assemble, and brought Paul down and set him before them.
