Коли ти вийдеш на війну проти свого ворога, та побачиш коні й вози, та народ, численніший від тебе, то не будеш боятися їх, бо з тобою Господь, Бог твій, що вивів тебе з єгипетського кра́ю.
Laws Concerning Warfare
“When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

І станеться, коли ви приступите до бо́ю, то піді́йде священик і буде промовляти до народу,
And when you draw near to the battle, the priest shall come forward and speak to the people
та й скаже до них: „Слухай, Ізраїлю, ви приступаєте сьогодні до бо́ю проти ваших ворогів. Нехай не зм'якне серце ваше, — не бійтеся, і не страшіться, і не лякайтеся їх,
and shall say to them, ‘Hear, O Israel, today you are drawing near for battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint. Do not fear or panic or be in dread of them,
бо Господь, Бог ваш, Він Той, що йде з вами воювати для вас з вашими ворогами, щоб спасти вас!“
for the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.’
А урядники будуть промовляти до народу, говорячи: „Хто є тут такий, що збудував нови́й дім, та не справив обряду поно́вин? Нехай він іде й вертається до свого дому, щоб не померти на війні, і щоб інший хто не справив на ньому обряду поно́вин.
Then the officers shall speak to the people, saying, ‘Is there any man who has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man dedicate it.
І хто є тут такий, що засадив виноградинка та не користався ним? Нехай він іде й вертається до свого дому, щоб не померти на війні, і щоб інший хто не скористався ним.
And is there any man who has planted a vineyard and has not enjoyed its fruit? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man enjoy its fruit.
А хто є тут такий, що засватав жінку, та не взяв її? Нехай він іде й вертається до свого дому, щоб не померти на війні, і щоб інший хто не взяв її“.
And is there any man who has betrothed a wife and has not taken her? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man take her.’
І далі промовлятимуть урядники до народу та й скажуть: „Хто є тут такий, що лякли́вий та м'якосе́рдий? Нехай він іде й вертається до свого дому, щоб не розсла́бив він серця́ братів своїх, як є серце його“.
And the officers shall speak further to the people, and say, ‘Is there any man who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go back to his house, lest he make the heart of his fellows melt like his own.’
І станеться, коли урядники закінча́ть промовляти до народу, то призначать зверхників для військо́вих відділів на чоло́ народу.
And when the officers have finished speaking to the people, then commanders shall be appointed at the head of the people.
Коли ти приступиш до міста, щоб воювати з ним, то запропонуй йому перше мир.
“When you draw near to a city to fight against it, offer terms of peace to it.
І станеться, якщо воно відповість тобі: „Мир“, і відчинить браму тобі, то ввесь той народ, що знаходиться в ньому, буде тобі на данину, і буде служити тобі.
And if it responds to you peaceably and it opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall do forced labor for you and shall serve you.
А якщо воно не зами́рить з тобою, і буде прова́дити з тобою війну, то обло́жиш його.
But if it makes no peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall besiege it.
І Господь, Бог твій, дасть його в руку твою, а ти повбиваєш усю чоловічу стать його вістрям меча.
And when the Lord your God gives it into your hand, you shall put all its males to the sword,
Тільки жіно́к, і дітей, і худобу, і все, що буде в тім місті, всю здо́бич його забере́ш собі, і будеш ти їсти здо́бич ворогів своїх, що дав тобі Господь, Бог твій.
but the women and the little ones, the livestock, and everything else in the city, all its spoil, you shall take as plunder for yourselves. And you shall enjoy the spoil of your enemies, which the Lord your God has given you.
Так ти зробиш усім містам, дуже далеким від тебе, що вони не з міст цих народів.
Thus you shall do to all the cities that are very far from you, which are not cities of the nations here.
Тільки з міст тих народів, які Господь, Бог твій, дає тобі на володіння, не позоставиш при житті жодної душі,
But in the cities of these peoples that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes,
бо конче вчиниш їх закляттям: Хіттеянина, і Амореянина, і Ханаанеяннна, і Періззеянина, і Хіввеянина, і Євусеянина, як наказав був тобі Господь, Бог твій,
щоб вони не навчили вас робити такого, як усі їхні гидо́ти, що робили вони богам своїм, бо тоді́ згрішите́ ви перед Господом, Богом своїм.
that they may not teach you to do according to all their abominable practices that they have done for their gods, and so you sin against the Lord your God.
Коли будеш обляга́ти місто багато днів, щоб воювати з ним та щоб здобути його, то не знищиш його де́рева, і не піднесеш сокири на нього, бо з нього ти їстимеш, і його не будеш стинати, бо чи ж пільне де́рево — то чоловік, щоб увійти перед тобою до обложеного міста?
“When you besiege a city for a long time, making war against it in order to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them. You may eat from them, but you shall not cut them down. Are the trees in the field human, that they should be besieged by you?
Тільки дерево, що про нього ти знаєш, що воно не дерево на їжу, його знищиш та зітне́ш, і будеш будувати з ньо́го речі обляга́ння проти того міста, яке провадить з тобою війну, аж до упадку його.
Only the trees that you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down, that you may build siegeworks against the city that makes war with you, until it falls.
