Israel Defeats the Southern Armies
Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard that Joshua had captured and completely destroyeda Ai and killed its king, just as he had destroyed the town of Jericho and killed its king. He also learned that the Gibeonites had made peace with Israel and were now their allies.

He and his people became very afraid when they heard all this because Gibeon was a large town — as large as the royal cities and larger than Ai. And the Gibeonite men were strong warriors.
І послав єрусалимський цар Адоні-Цедек до хевронського царя Гогама, і до ярмутського царя Пір'ама, і до лахіського царя Яфії, і до еґлонського царя Девіра, говорячи:
So King Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem sent messengers to several other kings: Hoham of Hebron, Piram of Jarmuth, Japhia of Lachish, and Debir of Eglon.

“Come and help me destroy Gibeon,” he urged them, “for they have made peace with Joshua and the people of Israel.”

So these five Amorite kings combined their armies for a united attack. They moved all their troops into place and attacked Gibeon.
І послали ґів'онські люди до Ісуса та до табо́ру в Ґілґал, говорячи: „Не стримуй своєї руки від своїх рабів! Прийди до нас скоро, і спаси нас та допоможи нам, бо зібралися на нас усі аморейські царі, що замешкують го́ри“.
The men of Gibeon quickly sent messengers to Joshua at his camp in Gilgal. “Don’t abandon your servants now!” they pleaded. “Come at once! Save us! Help us! For all the Amorite kings who live in the hill country have joined forces to attack us.”
І рушив Ісус із Ґілґалу, він та з ним усі вояки́ й військо́ві лицарі.
So Joshua and his entire army, including his best warriors, left Gilgal and set out for Gibeon.
І сказав Господь до Ісуса: „Не бійся їх, бо Я віддав їх у твою руку, — ніхто з них не встоїть перед тобою“.
“Do not be afraid of them,” the LORD said to Joshua, “for I have given you victory over them. Not a single one of them will be able to stand up to you.”
І прибув до них Ісус знена́цька, — ці́лу ніч ішов із Ґілґалу.
Joshua traveled all night from Gilgal and took the Amorite armies by surprise.
І Господь навів на них замі́шання перед Ізраїлем, і побив їх великою пора́зкою в Ґів'оні. І він гнав їх дорогою входу до Бет-Хорону, і бив їх аж до Азеки та аж до Маккеди.
The LORD threw them into a panic, and the Israelites slaughtered great numbers of them at Gibeon. Then the Israelites chased the enemy along the road to Beth-horon, killing them all along the way to Azekah and Makkedah.

As the Amorites retreated down the road from Beth-horon, the LORD destroyed them with a terrible hailstorm from heaven that continued until they reached Azekah. The hail killed more of the enemy than the Israelites killed with the sword.
Тоді Ісус говорив Господе́ві того дня, коли Господь дав аморе́янина перед Ізраїлевих синів, та й сказав на оча́х Ізраїля: „Стань, сонце, в Ґів'оні, а ти, місяцю, ув айялонській долині!
On the day the LORD gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the LORD in front of all the people of Israel. He said,
“Let the sun stand still over Gibeon,
and the moon over the valley of Aijalon.”
“Let the sun stand still over Gibeon,
and the moon over the valley of Aijalon.”
І сонце затри́малося, а місяць спинився, аж поки народ відімстився своїм ворогам“. Чи це не написане в книзі Праведного? І сонце стало на половині неба, і не поспішалося заходити майже ці́лий день.
І не було такого, як день той, ані перед ним, ані по ньому, щоб Господь так слухав лю́дського голосу, — бо Господь воював для Ізраїля.
There has never been a day like this one before or since, when the LORD answered such a prayer. Surely the LORD fought for Israel that day!
І вернувся Ісус, а з ним увесь Ізраїль до табо́ру в Ґілґал.
Then Joshua and the Israelite army returned to their camp at Gilgal.
А ті п'ять царів повтікали, та й схова́лися в печері в Маккеді.
Joshua Kills the Five Southern Kings
During the battle the five kings escaped and hid in a cave at Makkedah.
І було доне́сено Ісусові й сказано: „Зна́йдені ті п'ять царів, схо́вані в печері в Маккеді“.
When Joshua heard that they had been found,
А Ісус відказав: „Приваліть велике каміння на о́твір печери, і призначте до неї людей, щоб їх стерегти.
he issued this command: “Cover the opening of the cave with large rocks, and place guards at the entrance to keep the kings inside.
А ви не стійте, — женіться за своїми ворогами, і понищте їхні за́дні сте́жі, і не давайте їм вхо́дити до їхніх міст, бо Господь, Бог ваш, віддав їх у вашу руку“.
The rest of you continue chasing the enemy and cut them down from the rear. Don’t give them a chance to get back to their towns, for the LORD your God has given you victory over them.”
І сталося, як завдав їм Ісус та Ізраїлеві сини дуже велику пора́зку, так, що прийшов їм кінець, а врято́вані повтікали від них, і повхо́дили до тверди́нних міст,
So Joshua and the Israelite army continued the slaughter and completely crushed the enemy. They totally wiped out the five armies except for a tiny remnant that managed to reach their fortified towns.
то ввесь народ у споко́ї вернувся до табо́ру до Ісуса в Маккеді, і ніхто не поворушив язика свого проти кого з Ізраїлевих синів!
Then the Israelites returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. After that, no one dared to speak even a word against Israel.
І сказав Ісус: „Відчиніть о́твір печери, і приведіть до мене з печери тих п'ятьо́х царів“.
Then Joshua said, “Remove the rocks covering the opening of the cave, and bring the five kings to me.”
І вони зробили так, і вивели до нього з печери тих п'ятьох царів: царя єрусалимського, царя хевронського, царя ярмутського, царя лахіського, царя еґлонського.
So they brought the five kings out of the cave — the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon.
І сталося, як привели́ тих царів до Ісуса, то Ісус закли́кав усіх Ізраїлевих людей, і сказав військо́вим начальникам, що йшли з ним: „Підійдіть, — поста́вте свої ноги на шиї цих царів“. І вони попідхо́дили, і поста́вили свої ноги на їхні шиї.
When they brought them out, Joshua told the commanders of his army, “Come and put your feet on the kings’ necks.” And they did as they were told.
І сказав до них Ісус: „Не бійтеся й не лякайтеся, будьте сильні та відважні, бо Господь зробить так усім вашим ворогам, із якими ви воюєте“.
“Don’t ever be afraid or discouraged,” Joshua told his men. “Be strong and courageous, for the LORD is going to do this to all of your enemies.”
А по цьому Ісус бив їх, і повбивав їх, і повісив їх на п'ятьох дере́вах. І висіли вони на тих дере́вах аж до вечора.
Then Joshua killed each of the five kings and impaled them on five sharpened poles, where they hung until evening.
І сталося на час за́ходу сонця, Ісус наказав, і поздіймали їх із дере́в, і повкида́ли їх до печери, де вони були поховалися, і понакладали велике каміння на о́твір печери, де воно аж до цього дня.
As the sun was going down, Joshua gave instructions for the bodies of the kings to be taken down from the poles and thrown into the cave where they had been hiding. Then they covered the opening of the cave with a pile of large rocks, which remains to this very day.
А Маккеду Ісус здобув того дня, і побив ві́стрям меча її та царя її, учинив закляттям їх та кожну особу, хто був у ній, — не позоставив жодного врятованого в ній. І зробив він її цареві те саме, що зробив був цареві єрихонському.
Israel Destroys the Southern Towns
That same day Joshua captured and destroyed the town of Makkedah. He killed everyone in it, including the king, leaving no survivors. He destroyed them all, and he killed the king of Makkedah as he had killed the king of Jericho.
А Ісус та ввесь Ізра́їль із ним перейшов з Маккеди до Лівни, та й воював проти Лівни.
Then Joshua and the Israelites went to Libnah and attacked it.
І дав Господь в Ізра́їлеву ру́ку також її та царя її, і він побив ві́стрям меча її та кожну особу, що в ній, — не позоставив жодного врятованого в ній. І зробив він цареві її, як зробив був цареві єрихонському.
There, too, the LORD gave them the town and its king. He killed everyone in it, leaving no survivors. Then Joshua killed the king of Libnah as he had killed the king of Jericho.
І перейшов Ісус та ввесь Ізраїль із ним із Лівни до Лахішу, і таборува́в при ньому та воював проти ньо́го.
From Libnah, Joshua and the Israelites went to Lachish and attacked it.
І дав Господь в Ізраїлеву руку Лахіш, — і здобув він його другого дня, і побив ві́стрям меча його та кожну особу, що в ньому, — усе так, як зробив був Лівні.
Here again, the LORD gave them Lachish. Joshua took it on the second day and killed everyone in it, just as he had done at Libnah.
Тоді прийшов ґезерський цар Горам допомогти Лахішу, та Ісус побив його й народ його, так що не позоставив жодного в ньому.
During the attack on Lachish, King Horam of Gezer arrived with his army to help defend the town. But Joshua’s men killed him and his army, leaving no survivors.
І перейшов Ісус та ввесь Ізра́їль із ним з Лахішу до Еґлону, і таборува́ли при ньому та воювали з ним.
Then Joshua and the Israelite army went on to Eglon and attacked it.
І здобули́ його того дня, і побили його ві́стрям меча, а кожну особу, що в ньому, того дня зробили закляттям, — усе так, як зробив був Лахішу.
They captured it that day and killed everyone in it. He completely destroyed everyone, just as he had done at Lachish.
І пішов Ісус та ввесь Ізраїль із ним з Еґлону до Хеврону, і воював із ним.
From Eglon, Joshua and the Israelite army went up to Hebron and attacked it.
І здобув його, і побив ві́стрям меча його та царя його, і всі міста його, і кожну особу, що в ньому, — не позоставив жодного врято́ваного, усе так, як зробив був Еґлонові. І зробив закляттям його та кожну особу, що в ньому була́.
They captured the town and killed everyone in it, including its king, leaving no survivors. They did the same thing to all of its surrounding villages. And just as he had done at Eglon, he completely destroyed the entire population.
І вернувся Ісус та ввесь Ізраїль із ним до Девіру, і воював із ним.
Then Joshua and the Israelites turned back and attacked Debir.
І він здобув його, і царя його, і всі міста його, і повбивали їх ві́стрям меча, та й зробив закляттям кожну душу, що в ньому, не позоставив жодного врято́ваного, — як зробив був Хевронові, так зробив Девірові та цареві його, і як зробив був Лівні та цареві її.
He captured the town, its king, and all of its surrounding villages. He completely destroyed everyone in it, leaving no survivors. He did to Debir and its king just what he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king.
І побив Ісус увесь край: гору, і Неґев і Шефелу, і узбі́ччя, і всіх їхніх царів, — не зоставив жодного врятованого, а кожну особу зробив закляттям, як наказав був Господь, Бог Ізраїлів.
І бив їх Ісус від Кадеш-Барнеа та аж до Аззи, і ввесь ґошенський край, і аж до Ґів'ону.
Joshua slaughtered them from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza and from the region around the town of Goshen up to Gibeon.
А всіх тих царів та їхній край Ісус здобув одним ра́зом, бо Господь, Бог Ізраїлів, воював для Ізраїля.
Joshua conquered all these kings and their land in a single campaign, for the LORD, the God of Israel, was fighting for his people.
