Resolve to Punish the Guilty
Then all the sons of Israel from Dan to Beersheba, including the land of Gilead, came out, and the congregation assembled as one man to the LORD at Mizpah.

І стали проводирі́ всього того народу, усі Ізраїлеві племе́на, на зборах Божого народу, — чотириста тисяч пішого люду, хто витягує меча.
The chiefs of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, took their stand in the assembly of the people of God, 400,000 foot soldiers who drew the sword.
І почули Веніяминові сини, що Ізраїлеві сини ввійшли до Міцпи. І сказали Ізраїлеві сини: „Скажіть, я́к сталося таке́ зло?“
(Now the sons of Benjamin heard that the sons of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) And the sons of Israel said, “Tell us, how did this wickedness take place?”
І відповів той чоловік Левит, чоловік тієї замордо́ваної жінки, та й сказав: „До Ґів'и, що Веніяминова, увійшов я та наложниця моя, щоб ночувати.
So the Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered and said, “I came with my concubine to spend the night at Gibeah which belongs to Benjamin.
І встали на мене госпо́дарі Ґів'и, і вночі оточили через мене той дім. Мене замишляли забити, а наложницю мою збезче́стили, — і померла вона.
“But the men of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the house at night because of me. They intended to kill me; instead, they ravished my concubine so that she died.
І схопи́в я наложницю, і порізав її, та й послав її по всьому полі Ізраїлевого володі́ння, бо вони вчинили розпу́сту та гидо́ту серед Ізраїля.
“And I took hold of my concubine and cut her in pieces and sent her throughout the land of Israel’s inheritance; for they have committed a lewd and disgraceful act in Israel.
Ось ви всі Ізраїлеві сини, — дайте собі тут слово та раду!“
“Behold, all you sons of Israel, give your advice and counsel here.”
І встав увесь народ, як оди́н муж, говорячи: „Не пі́демо ніхто до намету свого, і не за́йдемо ніхто до дому свого!
Then all the people arose as one man, saying, “Not one of us will go to his tent, nor will any of us return to his house.
А тепер оце та річ, що зро́бимо Ґів'ї: підемо на неї за жеребко́м!
“But now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up against it by lot.
І ві́зьмемо десятеро людей на сотню, щодо всіх Ізраїлевих племен, і сотню на тисячу, і тисячу на десять тисяч, щоб узяли поживи для народу, щоб вони прийшли зробити Ґів'ї Веніямина, згідно з усією гидо́тою, що він зробив Ізраїлеві“.
“And we will take 10 men out of 100 throughout the tribes of Israel, and 100 out of 1,000, and 1,000 out of 10,000 to supply food for the people, that when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, they may punish them for all the disgraceful acts that they have committed in Israel.”
І був зі́браний кожен ізра́їльтянин до того міста ра́зом, як один чоловік.
Thus all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, united as one man.
І послали Ізраїлеві племе́на людей по всіх Веніями́нових ро́дах, говорячи: „Що́ це за зло, що сталось між вами?
Then the tribes of Israel sent men through the entire tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What is this wickedness that has taken place among you?
А тепер давайте тих людей, розпусних синів, що в Ґів'ї, — і ми повбиваємо їх, та й ви́губимо зло з Ізраїля“. Та не хотіли Веніяминові сини слухати голосу своїх братів, Ізраїлевих синів.
“Now then, deliver up the men, the worthless fellows in Gibeah, that we may put them to death and remove this wickedness from Israel.” But the sons of Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brothers, the sons of Israel.
І Веніяминові сини були зі́брані з міст до Ґів'ї, щоб піти на війну з Ізраїлевими синами.
The sons of Benjamin gathered from the cities to Gibeah, to go out to battle against the sons of Israel.
І Веніяминові сини з міст були перелі́чені того дня, — двадцять і шість тисяч чоловіка, що витягують меча, окрім ме́шканців Ґів'и, — із них були перелічені сім сотень вибраного чоловіка.
From the cities on that day the sons of Benjamin were numbered, 26,000 men who draw the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah who were numbered, 700 choice men.
З усього того наро́ду було сім сотень вибраного чоловіка, із нечинною рукою прави́ці своєї, лівші, — кожен той кидав каменем із пращі на волос, і не схи́бував.
Out of all these people 700 choice men were left-handed; each one could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.
І були перелічені ізра́їльтяни, окрім Веніямина, — чотириста тисяч чоловіка, що витягують меча, кожен військо́вий.
Then the men of Israel besides Benjamin were numbered, 400,000 men who draw the sword; all these were men of war.
І встали вони, і ввійшли до Бет-Елу, і питалися Бога, та й сказали Ізраїлеві сини: „Хто пі́де нам спе́реду на бій з Веніяминовими синами?“ І сказав Господь: „Юда спе́реду“.
Civil War, Benjamin Defeated
Now the sons of Israel arose, went up to Bethel, and inquired of God and said, “Who shall go up first for us to battle against the sons of Benjamin?” Then the LORD said, “Judah shall go up first.”
І встали Ізраїлеві сини рано вра́нці, і таборува́ли при Ґів'ї.
So the sons of Israel arose in the morning and camped against Gibeah.
І вийшов Ізра́їльтянин на війну з Веніямином, і сточи́ли ізра́їльтяни з ними бій при Ґів'ї.
The men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin, and the men of Israel arrayed for battle against them at Gibeah.
І вийшли Веніяминові сини з Ґів'и, та й повалили між Ізраїлем того дня двадцять і дві тисячі чоловіка на землю.
Then the sons of Benjamin came out of Gibeah and felled to the ground on that day 22,000 men of Israel.
І зміцнився наро́д, Ізраїлеві мужі, і точили бій далі в тому місці, де точили бій першого дня.
But the people, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves and arrayed for battle again in the place where they had arrayed themselves the first day.
І ввійшли Ізраїлеві сини до Бет-Елу, та й плакали перед Господнім лицем аж до вечора. І питалися вони Господа, говорячи: „Чи далі піду́ я на бій з синами Веніямина, мого брата?“ І сказав Господь: „Ідіть на нього!“
The sons of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until evening, and inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall we again draw near for battle against the sons of my brother Benjamin?” And the LORD said, “Go up against him.”
І прийшли Ізраїлеві сини до Веніяминових синів дня другого.
Then the sons of Israel came against the sons of Benjamin the second day.
А Веніямин вийшов із Ґів'ї другого дня навпроти них, та й повалив між Ізраїлевими синами на землю ще вісімнадцять тисяч чоловіка, — усі ті, що витягають меча.
Benjamin went out against them from Gibeah the second day and felled to the ground again 18,000 men of the sons of Israel; all these drew the sword.
І прийшли всі Ізраїлеві сини та ввесь народ, і ввійшли до Бет-Елу, та й плакали, і сиділи там перед Господнім лицем, і по́стили того дня аж до вечора. І прине́сли вони цілопа́лення та мирні жертви перед Господнім лицем.
Then all the sons of Israel and all the people went up and came to Bethel and wept; thus they remained there before the LORD and fasted that day until evening. And they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
І питалися Ізраїлеві сини Господа (а за тих днів ковче́г Божого заповіту був там.
The sons of Israel inquired of the LORD (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,
А Пінхас, син Елеазара, Ааронового сина, стояв тими днями перед Його лицем), говорячи: „Чи далі піду́ ще на бій з синами Веніямина, мого брата, чи спинюся?“ А Господь сказав: „Ідіть, бо взавтра Я дам його в твою руку“.
and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, Aaron’s son, stood before it to minister in those days), saying, “Shall I yet again go out to battle against the sons of my brother Benjamin, or shall I cease?” And the LORD said, “Go up, for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”
І пішли Ізраїлеві сини на синів Веніяминових третього дня, і сточили бій проти Ґів'ї, як і раніш.
The sons of Israel went up against the sons of Benjamin on the third day and arrayed themselves against Gibeah as at other times.
І вийшли Веніяминові сини навпроти народу, одірвалися від міста, і зачали класти трупи з народу, як раз-у-раз, на битих дорогах, що одна йде до Бет-Елу, а одна до Ґів'ї, у полі, — коло тридцяти чоловіка між Ізраїлем.
The sons of Benjamin went out against the people and were drawn away from the city, and they began to strike and kill some of the people as at other times, on the highways, one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah, and in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
І сказали Веніяминові сини: „Биті вони перед нами, як перше!“ А Ізраїлеві сини сказали: „Утікаймо, — і віді́рвемо їх від міста на дороги“.
The sons of Benjamin said, “They are struck down before us, as at the first.” But the sons of Israel said, “Let us flee that we may draw them away from the city to the highways.”
І кожен муж Ізраїля повстав із свого місця, і сточили бій у Баал-Тамарі, а Ізраїлева за́сідка рушила з свого місця, з Мааре-Ґева.
Then all the men of Israel arose from their place and arrayed themselves at Baal-tamar; and the men of Israel in ambush broke out of their place, even out of Maareh-geba.
І прийшли перед Ґів'у десять тисяч чоловіка, ви́браного з усього Ізраїля, і бій став тяжки́й. А вони не знали, що суне на них те зло.
When ten thousand choice men from all Israel came against Gibeah, the battle became fierce; but Benjamin did not know that disaster was close to them.
І вдарив Господь Веніямина перед Ізраїлем, і Ізраїлеві сини повалили того дня між Веніямином двадцять і п'ять тисяч і сто чоловіка, — усі ті, що витягають меча.
And the LORD struck Benjamin before Israel, so that the sons of Israel destroyed 25,100 men of Benjamin that day, all who draw the sword.
І побачили Веніяминові сини, що побиті вони, а ізра́їльтяни уступили місце Веніяминові, бо вірили за́сідці, яку поставили на Ґів'у.
So the sons of Benjamin saw that they were defeated. When the men of Israel gave ground to Benjamin because they relied on the men in ambush whom they had set against Gibeah,
А за́сідка поспішилася, і напала на Ґів'у. І за́сідка вступилася, і побила все місто ві́стрям меча.
the men in ambush hurried and rushed against Gibeah; the men in ambush also deployed and struck all the city with the edge of the sword.
А Ізра́їльтянин мав із за́сідкою умовленого знака, — щоб із міста підняла великий дим.
Now the appointed sign between the men of Israel and the men in ambush was that they would make a great cloud of smoke rise from the city.
І відступили ізраїльтяни в бою, а Веніямин зачав класти трупи в Ізраїлі, близько тридцятеро люда, бо казали вони: „Дійсно, справді побитий він перед нами, як за першого бою!“
Then the men of Israel turned in the battle, and Benjamin began to strike and kill about thirty men of Israel, for they said, “Surely they are defeated before us, as in the first battle.”
А з міста став підійматися стовп диму. І обернувся Веніямин позад себе, — аж ось усе місто піднялося димом до неба!
But when the cloud began to rise from the city in a column of smoke, Benjamin looked behind them; and behold, the whole city was going up in smoke to heaven.
І обернувся Ізра́їльтянин, а Веніями́нівець перестра́шився, бо побачив, що досягло його те зло.
Then the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were terrified; for they saw that disaster was close to them.
І обернулися вони перед Ізра́їльтянином до дороги на пустиню, та бій досягав його, а ті, що з міст, валили його в сере́дині його́.
Therefore, they turned their backs before the men of Israel toward the direction of the wilderness, but the battle overtook them while those who came out of the cities destroyed them in the midst of them.
Вони оточили Веніямина, гнали його до Менухи, топтали його аж до Ґів'ї зо сходу сонця.
They surrounded Benjamin, pursued them without rest and trod them down opposite Gibeah toward the east.
Полягло тоді з Веніямина вісімнадцять тисяч чоловіка, — усе це люди хоробрі.
Thus 18,000 men of Benjamin fell; all these were valiant warriors.
І поверну́лися вони, і втікли в пустиню до Села-Ріммону. А ті побили поодиноких утікачів по дорогах, як дозби́рюється останній виноград, п'ять тисяч люда. І гналися за ними аж до Ґід'ому, і побили з нього дві тисячі люда.
The rest turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, but they caught 5,000 of them on the highways and overtook them at Gidom and killed 2,000 of them.
І було всіх, що впали того дня з Веніямина, двадцять і п'ять тисяч чоловіка, що витягають меча, — усе це люди хоробрі.
So all of Benjamin who fell that day were 25,000 men who draw the sword; all these were valiant warriors.
І обернулися вони, і повтікали в пустиню до Села-Ріммону, — шістсот чоловіка. І сиділи вони в Села-Ріммоні чотири місяці.
But 600 men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and they remained at the rock of Rimmon four months.
А ізра́їльтяни вернулися до Веніяминових синів, та й повбивали їх ві́стрям меча, — мужчин із міста, і худобу, і все зна́йдене. А всі міста, що знаходились по дорозі, пустили з огнем.
The men of Israel then turned back against the sons of Benjamin and struck them with the edge of the sword, both the entire city with the cattle and all that they found; they also set on fire all the cities which they found.
