Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle. And they were gathered at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.

І зібра́лися Саул та ізра́їльтяни, і таборува́ли в долині Елі, і вставилися до бо́ю проти филисти́млян.
And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered, and encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in line of battle against the Philistines.
І стояли филисти́мляни на горі з того боку, а Ізраїль стояв на горі з цього боку, а поміж ними долина.
And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with a valley between them.
І вийшов із филистимських табо́рів однобо́рець, ім'я́ йому Ґолія́т із Ґату. Високий був — шість ліктів і п'ядь.
А на голові його — мідяний шоло́м, і він одя́гнений був у па́нцера з луски́; а вага того па́нцера — п'ять тисяч шеклів міді.
А на нога́х його — мідяні наголі́нники, а за плечи́ма його — мідяний спис.
And he had bronze armor on his legs, and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders.
А держа́к списа його — як ткацький вал, а ві́стря спи́су його — шістсот шеклів заліза. А перед ним ходив щитоно́ша.
The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron. And his shield-bearer went before him.
І став він, і кликнув до Ізраїлевих полків, та й сказав до них: „Чого ви вийшли ставати до бо́ю? Чи ж я не филисти́млянин, а ви не раби Саулові? Оберіть собі кого, і нехай він зі́йде до мене.
He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.
Якщо він зможе воювати зо мною, і вб'є мене, то ми ста́немо вам за рабів. А якщо я перемо́жу його, і вб'ю його, то ви станете нам за рабів, і будете служити нам“.
If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.”
І сказав филисти́млянин: „Я цього дня зневажив Ізраїлеві полки́. Дайте мені чоловіка, і бу́демо битися вдвох“.
And the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together.”
І чув Саул та ввесь Ізраїль ці слова филисти́млянина, — і вони перестра́шилися та сильно наляка́лися.
When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
А Давид — син того мужа ефра́тянина, з Юдиного Віфлеєму, а ім'я́ йому Єссе́й, що мав во́сьмеро синів. І цей чоловік за Саулових днів був стари́й, увійшов у літа.
І пішли троє найстарших Єссеєвих синів, пішли за Саулом на війну́. А імена́ трьох синів його, що пішли на війну: перворідний Еліяв, а другий його — Авінадав, а третій — Шамма.
The three oldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle. And the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
А Давид — він найменший, а три найстарші пішли за Саулом.
David was the youngest. The three eldest followed Saul,
А Давид ходив до Саула, та вертався па́сти отару свого батька в Віфлеємі.
but David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.
А той филисти́млянин підхо́див ранком та ввечорі, і виступав сорок день.
For forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand, morning and evening.
І сказав Єссей до сина свого Давида: „Візьми но для братів своїх ефу́ цього пра́женого зе́рна, і десять цих хлібі́в, та й віднеси́ скоренько до табо́ру до своїх братів.
А цих десять кусків сиру віднесеш для тисячника, і розізнаєш про пово́дження братів своїх, і вивідай про їхні потреби.“
Also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. See if your brothers are well, and bring some token from them.”
А Саул і вони, та всі ізра́їльтяни були в долині Елі, — воювали з филисти́млянами.
Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
І встав Давид рано вранці, і полиши́в ота́ру свою на сто́рожа; і взяв та й пішов, як наказав йому Єссей. І ввійшов він до обо́зу, а ві́йсько вихо́дило до бойово́го стро́ю, і підняли́ вони окрик у бою́.
And David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the encampment as the host was going out to the battle line, shouting the war cry.
І ви́шикувалися Ізраїль та Филисти́млянин ла́ва проти ла́ви.
And Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army.
І Давид позоставив свою но́шу в сто́рожа речей, та й побіг до по́лку. І ввійшов він, і запитав своїх братів про пово́дження.
And David left the things in charge of the keeper of the baggage and ran to the ranks and went and greeted his brothers.
А коли він розмовляв із ними, аж ось виходить із филистимських полкі́в одноборець, филисти́млянин Ґолія́т ім'я́ йому, із Ґату. І промовляв він ті самі слова́, а Давид почув.
As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him.
А всі ізра́їльтяни, коли бачили того чоловіка, то втікали перед ним та дуже лякалися.
All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were much afraid.
І говорив Ізра́їльтянин: „Чи бачите ви цього чоловіка, що виходить? А виходить він, щоб зневажа́ти Ізраїля. І буде, — того чоловіка, що вб'є його, збагати́ть його цар великим багатством, і дочку́ свою віддасть йому, а дім його батька зробить вільним в Ізраїлі“.
And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. And the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house free in Israel.”
І спитався Давид тих людей, хто стояв з ним, говорячи: „Що́ буде зро́блене тому, хто вб'є цього филисти́млянина й зді́йме обра́зу з Ізраїля? Бо хто цей необрізаний филисти́млянин, що так зневажає полки́ Живого Бога?“
And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
А народ сказав йому те саме слово, говорячи: „Отак буде зро́блено чоловікові, хто вб'є його“.
And the people answered him in the same way, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.”
І почув Еліяв, його найстарший брат, як він говорив до людей. І запалився Еліявів гнів на Давида, і він сказав: „Чого то зійшов ти? І на ко́го ти позоставив трохи тієї отари в пустині? Я знаю зарозумі́лість твою та порожнечу твого серця, бо ти зійшов, щоб подивитися на війну́!“
Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men. And Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”
А Давид відказав: „Та що́ я зробив тепер? Чи не на нака́з батька?“
And David said, “What have I done now? Was it not but a word?”
І він відвернувся від нього до іншого, і запитував про те саме. А народ відповів йому те саме, як перше.
And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke in the same way, and the people answered him again as before.
І були почуті слова ті, що говорив Давид, і донесли їх Саулові, і він покликав його.
When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul, and he sent for him.
І сказав Давид до Саула: „Хай не лякається нічиє серце через нього. Раб твій пі́де, і буде битися з отим филистимлянином“.
And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
І сказав Саул до Давида: „Ти не можеш піти на того филистимлянина битися з ним, бо ти мали́й, а він воя́к від своєї мо́лодости“.
And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.”
І сказав Давид до Саула: „Твій раб був пастухо́м свого батька при отарі, і прихо́див лев, а також — ведмідь, та й тягнув штуку дрібно́ї худоби зо стада,
But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock,
а я вихо́див за ним, і побивав його, і виривав те з па́щі його. А як він ставав на мене, то я хапав його за його гри́ву, та й побивав його.
I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him.
І лева, і ведмедя побива́в твій раб. І цей необрізаний филисти́млянин буде, як один із них, бо він зневажив полки́ Живого Бога!“
Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”
І сказав Давид: „Господь, що врятува́в мене з лапи лева та з лапи ведмедя, Він урятує мене з руки цього филисти́млянина“. І сказав Саул: „Іди, і нехай Господь буде з тобою!“
And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
І зодягнув Саул Давида в свою о́діж, і дав мідяно́го шоло́ма на його голову, і надів на нього па́нцера.
Then Saul clothed David with his armor. He put a helmet of bronze on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail,
І прип'я́в Давид меча його на одежу свою, та й силкува́вся йти, бо він не звик був до того. І сказав Давид до Саула: „Не мо́жу в цьому ходити, бо я не звик!“ І поскида́в Давид їх із себе.
and David strapped his sword over his armor. And he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.” So David put them off.
І взяв він кия свого в свою руку, і вибрав собі п'ять ви́гладжених камінці́в із потоку, і поклав їх у пастушу то́рбу, яку мав, та в торби́ну, а його пра́ща — у руці його. І він пішов до филисти́млянина.
Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.
А филисти́млянин підхо́див усе ближче до Давида, і чоловік ніс щита́ перед ним.
And the Philistine moved forward and came near to David, with his shield-bearer in front of him.
І подивився филисти́млянин, та й побачив Давида, — і злегкова́жив його, бо той був ще хлопець, рум'яний юна́к струнко́ї поста́ви.
And when the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance.
І сказав филисти́млянин до Давида: „Чи я пес, що ти вийшов на мене з ки́єм?“ І филисти́млянин прокляв Давида своїми богами.
And the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
І сказав филисти́млянин до Давида: „Ходи ж до мене, а я твоє тіло віддам пта́ству небесному та звірині́ польові́й“.
The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the field.”
І сказав Давид до филисти́млянина: „Ти йдеш на мене з мечем і списом та ра́тищем, а я йду на тебе в Ім'я́ Господа Савао́та, Бога військ Ізра́їлевих, які́ ти знева́жив.
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
Сьогодні віддасть тебе Господь у мою ру́ку, — і я поб'ю́ тебе́, і відітну́ голову твою з тебе, і дня цього я дам па́дло филистимського табо́ру птаству небесному та земній звірині́. І пізнає вся земля, що є Бог Ізраїлів!
This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,
І пізнає вся громада те, що Господь спасає не мече́м та списом, — бо це війна Господа, і Він віддасть вас у нашу руку“.
and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”
І сталося, коли филисти́млянин устав і пішов, і збли́зився до Давида, то Давид поспішив і побіг до ла́ви навпроти филисти́млянина.
When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.
І простя́г Давид руку свою до то́рби, і взяв звідти ка́меня, та й кинув із пращі, — і вдарив филисти́млянина в чоло́ його. І той камінь втявся йому в чоло́, — і він упав на обличчя своє на землю.
And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.
І отак переміг Давид филисти́млянина пра́щею та ка́менем, — і вдарив він филисти́млянина, та й убив його, а меча́ не було в Давидовій руці.
So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David.
І підбіг Давид, і став на филисти́млянина, і ви́хопив його меча́, і витяг його з його пі́хви, — та й убив його, і відтяв ним йому го́лову! І побачили филисти́мляни, що помер їх сила́ч, — і стали втікати!
Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
А люди Ізраїлеві та Юдині схопи́лися, і зняли́ крик, та й погнали филисти́млян аж доти, де йдеться до Ґа́ю, і аж до брами Екро́ну. І падали трупи филисти́млян по дорозі аж до Шаараїму, і аж до Ґату, і аж до Екрону.
І верну́лися Ізраїлеві сини з пого́ні за филистимлянами, та й розграбува́ли їхні табо́ри.
And the people of Israel came back from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.
А Давид узяв го́лову того филисти́млянина, і приніс її до Єрусалиму, а збро́ю його склав у своєму наме́ті.
And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.
А як Саул побачив Давида, що вихо́див напроти филисти́млянина, то сказав до Авне́ра, провідника́ війська: „Чий син оцей хло́пець, Авне́ре?“ А Авне́р відказав: „Присягаю життям твоїм, о ца́рю, що не знаю!“
As soon as Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.”
І сказав цар: „Запитай, чий син цей юна́к?“
And the king said, “Inquire whose son the boy is.”
А коли Давид вертався, побивши филисти́млянина, то Авне́р узяв його й привів його перед Саула, а голова́ филисти́млянина — у руці його.
And as soon as David returned from the striking down of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
