І позбиралися до нього кожен пригно́блений, і кожен, хто був задо́вжений, і кожен огі́рчений в душі, — і він став над ними провіднико́м. І було їх із ним близько чотирьох сотень люда.
Then others began coming — men who were in trouble or in debt or who were just discontented — until David was the captain of about 400 men.
І пішов Давид ізвідти до Моавської Міцпи́, та й сказав до моавського царя: „Нехай при́йде батько мій та мати моя, і будуть із вами, аж поки я бу́ду знати, що́ зро́бить мені Бог“.
Later David went to Mizpeh in Moab, where he asked the king, “Please allow my father and mother to live here with you until I know what God is going to do for me.”
І він привів їх до моавського царя, і вони осілися з ним на всі дні Давидового перебува́ння в тверди́ні.
So David’s parents stayed in Moab with the king during the entire time David was living in his stronghold.
А пророк Ґад сказав до Давида: „Ти не бу́деш сидіти в тверди́ні, — іди, і пере́йдеш собі до Юдиного кра́ю!“ І пішов Давид, і прийшов до лісу Херет.
One day the prophet Gad told David, “Leave the stronghold and return to the land of Judah.” So David went to the forest of Hereth.
І почув Саул, що пі́знаний Давид та люди, хто з ним. А Саул сидів у Ґів'ї під тамариском на узгір'ї, а спис його був у руці його, і всі його раби стояли при ньому.
The news of his arrival in Judah soon reached Saul. At the time, the king was sitting beneath the tamarisk tree on the hill at Gibeah, holding his spear and surrounded by his officers.
І сказав Саул до слуг своїх, що стояли при ньому: „Послухайте, веніями́нівці! Чи вже ж Єссе́їв син дасть усім вам поля́ та виноградники? Чи вже ж настано́вить усіх вас тисячниками та сотниками,
що всі ви змовилися на мене, і не доне́сли до вуха мого, що син мій склав умову з Єссе́євим сином, і ніхто з вас не змилосе́рдився надо мною, і не відкрив мені, що син мій поставив мого раба чатува́ти на мене, і те діється і цього дня?“
Is that why you have conspired against me? For not one of you told me when my own son made a solemn pact with the son of Jesse. You’re not even sorry for me. Think of it! My own son — encouraging him to kill me, as he is trying to do this very day!”
І відповів ідуме́янин Доеґ, — а він стояв при Саулових слу́гах, — і сказав: „Я бачив Єссе́євого сина, що прихо́див до Но́ва, до Ахімеле́ха, Ахітувового сина,
Then Doeg the Edomite, who was standing there with Saul’s men, spoke up. “When I was at Nob,” he said, “I saw the son of Jesse talking to the priest, Ahimelech son of Ahitub.
і він питав для нього Господа, і дав йому поживи на дорогу, і дав йому меча́ филисти́млянина Ґолія́та“.
Ahimelech consulted the LORD for him. Then he gave him food and the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”
І послав цар покликати священика Ахімеле́ха, сина Ахітувового, та ввесь дім його батька, священиків, що в Нові. І всі вони прибули́ до царя.
The Slaughter of the Priests
King Saul immediately sent for Ahimelech and all his family, who served as priests at Nob.
А Саул сказав: „Слухай но, сину Ахітувів!“ А той відказав: „Ось я, мій пане!“
When they arrived, Saul shouted at him, “Listen to me, you son of Ahitub!”
“What is it, my king?” Ahimelech asked.
“What is it, my king?” Ahimelech asked.
І сказав до нього Саул: „На́що ви змо́вилися на мене, ти та Єссеїв син, коли ти дав йому хліба та меча, і питав для нього Бога, щоб повстав він на мене й чига́в, як цього дня?“
“Why have you and the son of Jesse conspired against me?” Saul demanded. “Why did you give him food and a sword? Why have you consulted God for him? Why have you encouraged him to kill me, as he is trying to do this very day?”
І відповів Ахімеле́х цареві та й сказав: „А хто серед усіх рабів твоїх вірний, як Давид, царів зять, і має при́ступ до тайної ради, і шанований у твоєму домі?
“But sir,” Ahimelech replied, “is anyone among all your servants as faithful as David, your son-in-law? Why, he is the captain of your bodyguard and a highly honored member of your household!
Хіба сьогодні зачав я питати для нього Бога? Борони мене Боже! Нехай цар не кладе закиду на раба свого та на ввесь дім батька мого, бо в усьому тому твій раб не знає нічого, — ані мало́го, ані великого“.
This was certainly not the first time I had consulted God for him! May the king not accuse me and my family in this matter, for I knew nothing at all of any plot against you.”
А цар сказав: „Конче помреш, Ахімелеху, ти та ввесь дім батька твого!“
“You will surely die, Ahimelech, along with your entire family!” the king shouted.
І сказав цар слу́гам, що стояли при ньому: „Підійдіть, і повбивайте Господніх священиків, бо й їхня рука ра́зом із Давидом, бо вони знали, що втікає він, та не доне́сли до вуха мого“. Та не хотіли цареві раби простягнути своєї руки, щоб діткнутися до Господніх священиків.
And he ordered his bodyguards, “Kill these priests of the LORD, for they are allies and conspirators with David! They knew he was running away from me, but they didn’t tell me!” But Saul’s men refused to kill the LORD’s priests.
Тоді цар сказав до Доеґа: „Підійди ти, і вдар священиків!“ І підійшов ідуме́янин Доеґ, та й ударив священиків, — і вбив того дня вісімдеся́т і п'ять чоловіка, що носять лляно́го ефо́да.
Then the king said to Doeg, “You do it.” So Doeg the Edomite turned on them and killed them that day, eighty-five priests in all, still wearing their priestly garments.
А Нов, священиче місто, цар побив ві́стрям меча все, — від чоловіка й аж до жінки, від дитини й аж до немовляти, і вола, і осла, і дрібну́ худо́бину, — усе побив ві́стрям меча.
Then he went to Nob, the town of the priests, and killed the priests’ families — men and women, children and babies — and all the cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats.
Та втік один син Ахімелеха, Ахітувового сина, а ім'я́ йому: Евіята́р. І втік він до Давида.
Only Abiathar, one of the sons of Ahimelech, escaped and fled to David.
І Евіята́р доніс Давидові, що Саул повбивав Господніх священиків.
When he told David that Saul had killed the priests of the LORD,
А Давид сказав до Евіята́ра: „Я знав того дня, що там ідумеянин Доеґ, яки́й конче розпові́сть Саулові. Я став причиною загибелі всіх душ дому твого́ батька!
David exclaimed, “I knew it! When I saw Doeg the Edomite there that day, I knew he was sure to tell Saul. Now I have caused the death of all your father’s family.
