Timothy Joins Paul and Silas

Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek.

Про Тимофія добре говорили браття в Лістрі та Іконії.

He was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium.

Павло хотів, щоб Тимофій пішов із ним, тому він зробив обрізання Тимофієві. Це було зроблено заради юдеїв, які мешкали у тієї місцевості, оскільки ті знали, що Тимофіїв батько був греком.

Paul wanted to have him go on with him. And he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that region, for they all knew that his father was Greek.

Проходячи через інші міста, вони передавали віруючим для послуху настанови, прийняті апостолами й старійшинами в Єрусалимі.

And as they went through the cities, they delivered to them the decrees to keep, which were determined by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem.

Тож церкви міцнішали в вірі, й число віруючих зростало з кожним днем.

So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.

Павло та його супутники пройшли землю Фриґійську та Ґалатську, але Дух Святий не дозволяв їм проповідувати Слово в Малій Азії.

The Macedonian Call

Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in [a]Asia.

Дійшовши до кордону Мізії, вони збиралися йти до Віфінії, але Дух Ісуса не пустив їх.

After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the [b]Spirit did not permit them.

Тоді, проминувши Мізію, вони прибули до Троади.

So passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.

Вночі Павлові було видіння, в якому якийсь чоловік із Македонії постав перед ним, благаючи: «Прийди до Македонії й допоможи нам».

And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”

10

Після цього видіння, ми [41] одразу ж зібралися йти до тієї землі, вирішивши, що то Бог покликав нас проповідувати македонцям Благовість.

Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Ми відпливли з Троади й попрямували до Самотракії, а наступного дня пристали до Неаполя.

Lydia Baptized at Philippi

Therefore, sailing from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day came to Neapolis,

Звідти ми пішли до міста Филипи, що було римською колонією та головним містом тієї частини Македонії, і провели там кілька днів.

and from there to Philippi, which is the [c]foremost city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city for some days.

В суботу ми вирушили за міську браму, до річки, сподіваючись, що знайдемо там місце для молитви. Ми сіли й почали розмовляти з жінками, які зібралися там.

And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there.

Серед них була жінка на ймення Лідія. Вона була купчихою, та торгувала багряними тканинами в місті Тіатирі. Вона поклонялася істинному Богу. Лідія слухала нас, і Господь відкрив її серце назустріч тому, що казав Павло.

Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul.

Коли вона та її домашні охрестилися, вона почала благати нас: «Якщо ви вважаєте, що я справді вірую в Господа, то зупиніться в моєму домі». Вона вмовила нас піти до неї.

And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” So she persuaded us.

16

Так сталося, що коли ми йшли до місця молитви, нам зустрілася дівчина-рабиня. Вона була одержима духом,[42] який давав їй силу передбачати майбутнє. Роблячи це, вона приносила величезний прибуток своїм господарям.

Paul and Silas Imprisoned

Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling.

17

Дівчина ходила за Павлом і всіма нами, вигукуючи: «Це слуги Всевишнього Бога! Вони провіщають вам шлях до спасіння!»

This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.”

18

Так тривало багато днів, і Павла це почало турбувати. Тож він обернувся й промовив до духа: «Наказую тобі іменем Ісуса Христа, вийди з неї!» І він негайно вийшов з дівчини.

And this she did for many days.
But Paul, greatly [d]annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour.

19

Коли її господарі побачили, що їхнім сподіванням на прибуток прийшов кінець, вони схопили Павла та Силу й потягли їх на базарну площу, а там передали владі.

But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities.

20

Коли вони привели Павла та Силу до міської влади, то сказали: «Ці люди — юдеї, вони каламутять усе місто!

And they brought them to the magistrates, and said, “These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city;

21

Вони проголошують звичаї, які для нас, римлян, є протизаконним прийняти або дотримуватися».

21

and they teach customs which are not lawful for us, being Romans, to receive or observe.”

22

Натовп приєднався до їхніх звинувачів. Володарі міста зірвали з апостолів одяг і наказали їх побити.

Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods.

23

Тяжко побитих, їх кинули до в’язниці й наказали вартовому пильно стерегти їх.

And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely.

24

Діставши такий наказ, він посадив апостолів у внутрішню камеру, а ноги їхні забив у колодки.

Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.

25

Близько опівночі Павло й Сила молилися й співали гімни Богу, а інші в’язні слухали їх.

The Philippian Jailer Saved

But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.

26

Зненацька стався сильний землетрус, аж захитався фундамент в’язниці. Всі двері раптом розчинилися, а кайдани з усіх в’язнів попадали.

Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed.

27

Вартовий прокинувся й, побачивши відчинені двері в’язниці, вихопив меча. Він хотів вбити себе, вважаючи, що в’язні втекли,

And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself.

28

та Павло голосно гукнув: «Не губи себе! Ми всі тут».

28

But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.”

29

Тоді вартовий наказав принести світло й кинувся всередину. Затремтівши зі страху, він упав на коліна перед Павлом та Силою.

Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.

30

А потім вивів їх і сказав: «Добродії, що мені робити, щоб здобути спасіння?»

30

And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

31

Вони відповіли: «Вір у Господа Ісуса, і ти будеш спасенний — ти й твої домашні».

31

So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

32

І апостоли розповіли Слово Господнє йому й усім іншим, хто був у тому домі.

32

Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house.

33

Тієї нічної години вартовий узяв їх, обмив їхні рани, й тут же його самого і його родину охрестили.

33

And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized.

34

Він привів Павла й Силу до своєї оселі і дав їм поїсти. Він, і вся його родина раділи, бо повірили у Бога.

Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.

35

Коли настав ранок, володарі міста послали воїнів, сказавши: «Звільніть тих людей».

Paul Refuses to Depart Secretly

And when it was day, the magistrates sent the [e]officers, saying, “Let those men go.”

36

Тоді вартовий передав ці слова Павлові: «Володарі міста сказали звільнити вас. Отже, виходьте зараз і йдіть з миром».

36

So the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Now therefore depart, and go in peace.”

37

Але Павло відповів воїнам: «Вони прилюдно били нас без суду, хоч ми римські громадяни, потім кинули нас до в’язниці. А тепер вони хочуть випустити нас таємно? Не буде цього! Вони повинні самі прийти й вивести нас із в’язниці».

But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out.”

38

Варта передала ці слова володарям міста. Почувши, що Павло і Сила — римляни, ті перелякалися.

And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans.

39

Вони прийшли й вибачилися перед Павлом і Силою, а потім вивели їх із в’язниці й попросили залишити їхнє місто.

39

Then they came and pleaded with them and brought them out, and asked them to depart from the city.

40

Вийшовши з в’язниці, Павло й Сила попрямували до дому Лідії. Побачивши там братів, Павло і Сила підбадьорили їх, а потім пішли звідти.

40

So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.
