Поки Петро та Іоан промовляли до людей, до них підійшли священики, начальник Храмової варти й кілька саддукеїв.

Peter and John Before the Council

And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,

Вони були стурбовані тим, що апостоли навчають людей, проповідуючи воскресіння мертвих через Ісуса.

Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

3

Вони заарештували Петра та Іоана й посадили їх під сторожу до ранку, бо вже був вечір.

And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide.

4

Але багато людей, які чули Слово, повірили. Число їх сягало п’яти тисяч.

4

Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.

5

Наступного дня юдейські вожді, старійшини та книжники зібралися в Єрусалимі.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes,

6

Також були там первосвященики Анна, Каяфа, Іоан, Олександр і всі інші з роду первосвященика.

And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.

7

Перед ними поставили Петра та Іоана, і почали розпитувати апостолів: «Чиєю владою і чиїм іменем ви це зробили?»

And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?

8

Тоді Петро, сповнений Духа Святого, відповів: «Вожді народу і старійшини!

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,

9

Якщо ви питаєте нас про ту добру справу, що була зроблена для хворого,

9

If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole;

10

тоді ви і всі люди Ізраїлю мусять знати таке: це було зроблено владою Ісуса Христа з Назарета, Якого ви розіп’яли. Бог воскресив Його з мертвих. Завдяки Йому цей чоловік, який був калікою, стоїть сьогодні перед вами цілком здоровий.

Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

11

Ісус —
камінь, [10] який ви, будівельники, відкинули, а він став наріжним.

11

This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.

12

Ніхто інший не дасть нам спасіння, бо немає іншого такого імені в світі. Бог послав Його людям, щоби принести їм спасіння».

12

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Коли члени Синедріону побачили сміливість Петра та Іоана і зрозуміли, що це були прості й неосвічені люди, вони були вражені. Вони також збагнули, що ці двоє були з Ісусом.

Peter and John Threatened, Released

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

14

Юдейські вожді не знайшли, що сказати, тим більше, що зцілений чоловік стояв поруч.

14

And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.

15

Вони наказали апостолам залишити Синедріон, та почали радитися між собою:

But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,

16

«Що ми можемо зробити з цими людьми? Адже це очевидно для всіх, хто мешкає в Єрусалимі, що завдяки їм сталося нечуване диво. Ми не можемо цього заперечити.

16

Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.

17

Але ми мусимо подбати про те, щоб ці чутки не поширювалися більше серед людей. Давайте застережемо їх нікому більше не говорити про Ісуса[11]».

But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.

18

Вони знову покликали апостолів і наказали їм більше зовсім нічого не говорити, ані навчати в ім’я Христове.

18

And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

19

Але Петро з Іоаном відповіли їм: «Розсудіть, чи справедливо це було б перед Господом, якби ми більше слухали вас, ніж Бога.

19

But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.

20

Ми не можемо припинити говорити про те, що чули й бачили».

20

For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

21

Члени Синедріону ще погрозили апостолам, а потім відпустили їх, бо не змогли знайти способу, як покарати Петра й Іоана, адже люди славили Бога за те, що сталося.

21

So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.

22

Тому чоловіку, з яким відбулося це чудо зцілення, було більше сорока років.

22

For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed.

23

Коли Петра й Іоана звільнили, вони повернулися до свого товариства, і розповіли про все, що казали їм первосвященики та старійшини.

The Believers' Prayer for Boldness

And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.

24

Вислухавши Петра та Іоана, віруючі одностайно піднесли голоси свої до Бога зі словами: «Господи, Ти створив небо, землю, море і все, що є в них.

24

And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:

25

Ти промовив Духом Святим через уста слуги Твого, нашого праотця Давида:
„Навіщо лютували народи? Навіщо марні задуми плели?

25

Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?

26

Земні царі себе до бою готували, Вожді разом збирались, намірялись супроти Господа і Його Христа піти”.

26

The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.

27

Так, Ірод та Понтій Пилат справді зібралися в Єрусалимі разом з поганами й людьми ізраїльськими проти Твого Святого Слуги Ісуса, Якого Ти зробив Христом.

27

For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,

28

Вони зробили все так, як Ти раніше вирішив, що мусить збутися владою і волею Твоєю.

28

For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

29

А тепер, Господи, послухай, що вони кажуть: вони намагаються нас залякати. Тож дай нам, Твоїм слугам, відвагу говорити Слово Твоє.

29

And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

30

Простягни руку Свою, щоби зцілити немічних. Яви нам знамення й чуда в ім’я [12] Святого Слуги Твого Ісуса».

30

By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.

31

Коли закінчили вони молитися, то те місце, де вони зібралися, затряслося. Дух Святий зійшов на них, і вони сповнилися відвагою промовляти Слово Боже.

31

And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

32

Усе товариство віруючих жило душа в душу. Ніхто не сказав, що його майно належить тільки йому. Вони завжди всім ділилися.

32

Sharing among Believers

And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

33

З великою силою апостоли і далі свідчили про воскресіння Господа Ісуса. І велике Боже благословіння було на них усіх.

33

And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

34-35

Ніхто з них ніколи не був у нужді. Ті, хто мали землю або будинки, продавали їх, а гроші приносили і клали до ніг апостолів, та ті гроші давалися кожному, хто мав у них потребу.

Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,

35

And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.

36

Так зробив і Йосип, якого апостоли називали Варнавою (що означає «Син утіхи»).

36

And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,

37

Він був левитом, родом з Кіпру. Продавши своє власне поле, Варнава приніс гроші і поклав їх апостолам до ніг.

37

Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
