А змій був найхитріший з усіх звірів, які на землі, котрих створив Господь Бог. І сказав змій жінці: Чому це Бог сказав: Не їжте з жодного дерева, яке в раю?

The Temptation and Fall of Man

Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

2

А жінка відповіла змієві: Плоди з дерев раю ми можемо їсти,

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;

3

та про плід дерева, що посеред раю, Бог сказав: Не їжте з нього і не доторкайтеся до нього, щоб ви не померли.

3

but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”

4

І сказав змій жінці: Ні! Ви не помрете! [1]

Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

5

Та Бог знає, що в той день, коли з’їсте з нього, ваші очі відкриються, і ви станете, як боги, маючи пізнання добра і зла.

For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

6

І жінка побачила, що дерево придатне для їжі й приємне на вигляд, і прекрасним є мати знання. Тож взявши його плід, вона з’їла його, і також дала своєму чоловікові, який був з нею, і вони обоє з’їли.

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was [a]pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

І відкрилися в обох очі, і пізнали, що були нагі, тож вони зшили листя смоківниці й зробили собі пояси.

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves [b]coverings.

8

І почули голос Господа Бога, Який ходив у раю в післяобідній час, і заховалися — Адам і його жінка — від присутності Господа Бога серед дерев раю.

And they heard the [c]sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the [d]cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

Та Господь Бог покликав Адама і запитав його: Адаме, де ти?

Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

10

А той відповів Йому: Я почув Твій голос, як Ти ходив у раю, і злякався, бо я нагий, тож заховався.

10

So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

11

Тоді Бог запитав його: Хто сповістив тобі, що ти нагий? Чи не їв ти з того дерева, з якого Я наказав тобі (з нього єдиного) не їсти?

And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

12

Адам сказав: Жінка, яку Ти дав, щоби була зі мною, — це вона мені дала з дерева, — і я з’їв!

12

Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

13

І Господь Бог запитав жінку: Чому ти це зробила? А жінка відповіла: Змій мене обманув, і я з’їла…

And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14

І тоді Господь Бог сказав змієві: За те, що ти це зробив, проклятий ти з-поміж усіх тварин і серед усіх звірів землі. На грудях своїх і череві повзатимеш та землю їстимеш у всі дні свого життя.

So the Lord God said to the serpent:
“Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.

15

І Я покладу ворожнечу між тобою і жінкою, між твоїм насінням і її насінням: воно [2] підстерігатиме твою голову, а ти вистежуватимеш [3] його п’яту!

15

And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”

16

А жінці Він сказав: Надто примножу [4] твої болі й твій стогін; у болях народжуватимеш дітей, і до твого чоловіка ти звертатимешся, а він над тобою пануватиме.

To the woman He said:
“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
In pain you shall bring forth children;
Your desire shall be [e]for your husband,
And he shall rule over you.”

17

Адамові ж сказав: Оскільки ти послухав голосу своєї жінки і з’їв з дерева, з того, про яке Я заповів тобі — з нього єдиного — не їсти, проклята земля у твоїх ділах. У скорботах їстимеш з неї в усі дні свого життя.

Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:
“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.

18

Терня і будяки буде родити тобі, і їстимеш польові рослини.

18

Both thorns and thistles it shall [f]bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.

19

У поті свого чола їстимеш свій хліб, доки не вернешся в землю, з якої ти був узятий, адже ти — земля, — і в землю відійдеш.

19

In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”

20

І дав Адам своїй жінці ім’я [Єва, що значить] Життя, тому що вона є матір’ю всіх живих.

And Adam called his wife’s name Eve,[g] because she was the mother of all living.

21

Адамові та його жінці Господь Бог зробив одяг зі шкур і зодягнув їх.

Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.

22

І сказав Бог: Ось Адам став наче один із Нас, який знає добро і зло. Тож тепер, аби часом він не простягнув руки, не взяв з дерева життя, не їв і не жив вічно.

22

Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever” —

23

І Господь Бог вислав його з раю насолоди обробляти землю, з якої був узятий.

23

therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.

24

Він вигнав Адама і поселив його напроти раю насолоди, і поставив херувимів та полум’яного меча, що обертався, аби стерегти дорогу до дерева життя.

24

So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
