Joseph’s Dreams
So Jacob settled again in the land of Canaan, where his father had lived as a foreigner.

Ось родовід Якова. Йосиф мав сімнадцять років і, будучи юнаком, пас овець зі своїми братами — із синами Вали та синами Зелфи, дружин свого батька. Йосиф приніс погану вістку своєму батькові Ізраїлеві.
This is the account of Jacob and his family. When Joseph was seventeen years old, he often tended his father’s flocks. He worked for his half brothers, the sons of his father’s wives Bilhah and Zilpah. But Joseph reported to his father some of the bad things his brothers were doing.
Яків же любив Йосифа більше за всіх своїх синів, бо він був сином його старості, і справив йому барвистий одяг.
А його брати, побачивши, що батько любить його більше за всіх своїх синів, зненавиділи його і ні про що не могли з ним спокійно говорити.
But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him.
Якось наснився Йосифові сон, і він розповів його своїм братам:
One night Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him more than ever.
здавалося мені, що ми серед поля в’язали снопи, і мій сніп устав і випростувався; ваші ж снопи, стоячи довкола, поклонилися моєму снопові.
“We were out in the field, tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly my bundle stood up, and your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine!”
А брати сказали йому: Невже ти насправді царюватимеш [1] над нами, невже ти насправді пануватимеш [2] над нами? І ще більше зросла ненависть до нього через його сни та через його розповіді.
His brothers responded, “So you think you will be our king, do you? Do you actually think you will reign over us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dreams and the way he talked about them.
А він побачив інший сон — та й виклав його своєму батькові й своїм братам: Ось наснився мені інший сон, — сказав він, — наче мені поклонялися сонце, місяць і одинадцять зірок.
Soon Joseph had another dream, and again he told his brothers about it. “Listen, I have had another dream,” he said. “The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed low before me!”
І докорив йому його батько, промовивши до нього: Що це за сон, який наснився тобі? Невже насправді я і твоя мати з твоїми братами прийдемо [3] поклонитися тобі до землі?
This time he told the dream to his father as well as to his brothers, but his father scolded him. “What kind of dream is that?” he asked. “Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow to the ground before you?”
Тож його брати сповнилися до нього заздрощами, а батько його зберіг у пам’яті сказане.
But while his brothers were jealous of Joseph, his father wondered what the dreams meant.
Якось пішли його брати пасти овець свого батька в Сихем.
Soon after this, Joseph’s brothers went to pasture their father’s flocks at Shechem.
А Ізраїль сказав Йосифові: Хіба не пасуть твої брати в Сихемі? Іди, посилаю тебе до них. А той відповів йому: Ось я.
When they had been gone for some time, Jacob said to Joseph, “Your brothers are pasturing the sheep at Shechem. Get ready, and I will send you to them.”
“I’m ready to go,” Joseph replied.
“I’m ready to go,” Joseph replied.
Тож Ізраїль йому сказав: Коли підеш, подивися, чи твої брати і вівці здорові, та й принеси мені вістку. І послав його з Хевронської долини, і той пішов у Сихем.
“Go and see how your brothers and the flocks are getting along,” Jacob said. “Then come back and bring me a report.” So Jacob sent him on his way, and Joseph traveled to Shechem from their home in the valley of Hebron.
І, як він блукав у долині, натрапив на нього чоловік. Тож запитав його чоловік, кажучи: Що шукаєш?
When he arrived there, a man from the area noticed him wandering around the countryside. “What are you looking for?” he asked.
Він же відповів: Шукаю моїх братів; підкажи мені, де вони пасуть?
“I’m looking for my brothers,” Joseph replied. “Do you know where they are pasturing their sheep?”
А чоловік йому сказав: Вони відійшли звідси, та я чув, як вони говорили: Підемо в Дотаїм. Тож пішов Йосиф за своїми братами і знайшов їх у Дотаїмі.
“Yes,” the man told him. “They have moved on from here, but I heard them say, ‘Let’s go on to Dothan.’” So Joseph followed his brothers to Dothan and found them there.
Ті побачили його здалека і, перш ніж він наблизився до них, задумали лихе, — щоб його вбити.
Joseph Sold into Slavery
When Joseph’s brothers saw him coming, they recognized him in the distance. As he approached, they made plans to kill him.
Тому тепер ходімо, вб’ємо його! Ми вкинемо його в одну з ям і скажемо: Лютий звір загриз його; і побачимо, що буде з його снами.
“Come on, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns. We can tell our father, ‘A wild animal has eaten him.’ Then we’ll see what becomes of his dreams!”
Та Рувим, почувши, вирвав його з їхніх рук і сказав: Не губімо його душі!
But when Reuben heard of their scheme, he came to Joseph’s rescue. “Let’s not kill him,” he said.
Не проливайте крові, вкиньте його он у ту яму в пустелі та рук не накладайте на нього, — сказав їм Рувим, щоб вирвати його з їхніх рук та повернути його батькові.
“Why should we shed any blood? Let’s just throw him into this empty cistern here in the wilderness. Then he’ll die without our laying a hand on him.” Reuben was secretly planning to rescue Joseph and return him to his father.
І сталося, коли Йосиф прийшов до своїх братів, то вони здерли з Йосифа барвисте вбрання, яке було на ньому,
So when Joseph arrived, his brothers ripped off the beautiful robe he was wearing.
і взяли, та й укинули його до ями — у порожній колодязь, в якому не було води.
Then they grabbed him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it.
Вони сіли їсти хліб і, підвівши очі, побачили: ось мандрівники-ізмаїльці йшли з Ґалаада, а їхні верблюди були нав’ючені пахощами, смолою і миррою. Йшли вони, прямуючи до Єгипту.
Then, just as they were sitting down to eat, they looked up and saw a caravan of camels in the distance coming toward them. It was a group of Ishmaelite traders taking a load of gum, balm, and aromatic resin from Gilead down to Egypt.
Тож Юда сказав своїм братам: Яка нам користь, коли вб’ємо нашого брата і скриємо його кров?
Давайте віддамо його цим ізмаїльцям, а наші руки хай не будуть на ньому, адже він — наш брат, наше тіло! І брати послухали його.
Instead of hurting him, let’s sell him to those Ishmaelite traders. After all, he is our brother — our own flesh and blood!” And his brothers agreed.
І проходили люди — мадіянці-купці, а брати витягли і вивели Йосифа з ями. Вони віддали Йосифа ізмаїльцям за двадцять золотих, і ті відвели Йосифа в Єгипет.
А Рувим повернувся до ями і не побачив Йосипа в ямі. Він роздер на собі одяг,
Some time later, Reuben returned to get Joseph out of the cistern. When he discovered that Joseph was missing, he tore his clothes in grief.
повернувся до своїх братів і сказав: Хлопця нема, а я — куди тепер піду?
Then he went back to his brothers and lamented, “The boy is gone! What will I do now?”
Вони ж взяли Йосифового плаща, зарізали козла і вимазали плаща кров’ю.
Then the brothers killed a young goat and dipped Joseph’s robe in its blood.
І відіслали барвистого плаща, віднесли своєму батькові, та й сказали: Це ми знайшли, упізнавай, чи це плащ твого сина, чи ні?
They sent the beautiful robe to their father with this message: “Look at what we found. Doesn’t this robe belong to your son?”
І той упізнав його, і сказав: Це плащ мого сина; лютий звір його загриз, звір викрав Йосифа.
Their father recognized it immediately. “Yes,” he said, “it is my son’s robe. A wild animal must have eaten him. Joseph has clearly been torn to pieces!”
Тож Яків роздер на собі одяг, одягнув мішковину на свої стегна і оплакував свого сина багато днів.
Then Jacob tore his clothes and dressed himself in burlap. He mourned deeply for his son for a long time.
Зібралися ж усі його сини й дочки, — вони прийшли втішити його, але він не бажав утішатися, кажучи: З плачем піду я до мого сина, до аду. Так плакав за ним його батько.
