І ось з Юди до Ветилю за Господнім словом прийшов Божий чоловік, а Єровоам стояв біля жертовника, щоб принести жертву.
Jeroboam Warned, Stricken
Now behold, there came a man of God from Judah to Bethel by the word of the LORD, while Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.

А той закликав до жертовника Господнім словом, проголошуючи: Жертовнику, жертовнику! Так говорить Господь: Ось у домі Давида син народжується, його ім’я — Йосія, і він принесе в жертву на тобі священиків високих місць, які приносять на тобі жертву, і спалить на тобі кості людей!
He cried against the altar by the word of the LORD, and said, “O altar, altar, thus says the LORD, ‘Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name; and on you he shall sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and human bones shall be burned on you.’”
І в той день дав ознаку, кажучи: Це слово, яке сказав Господь, проголошуючи: Ось розвалиться жертовник і проллється жир, який на ньому!
Then he gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign which the LORD has spoken, ‘Behold, the altar shall be split apart and the ashes which are on it shall be poured out.’”
І сталося, коли цар Єровоам почув слова Божого чоловіка, сказані над жертовником, що у Ветилі, то цар простягнув свою руку від жертовника, наказуючи: Схопіть його! І ось його рука, яку він простягнув проти нього, усохла, і він не міг повернути її до себе.
Now when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him.” But his hand which he stretched out against him dried up, so that he could not draw it back to himself.
І як ознака, яку дав Божий чоловік за Господнім словом, жертовник розвалився, і жир із жертовника пролився.
The altar also was split apart and the ashes were poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.
І цар Єровоам сказав Божому чоловікові: Помолися до обличчя Господа, твого Бога, і нехай повернеться до мене моя рука! І Божий чоловік помолився до обличчя Господа, і рука царя повернулася до нього, і стала такою, як перед тим.
The king said to the man of God, “Please entreat the LORD your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” So the man of God entreated the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to him, and it became as it was before.
І цар промовив до Божого чоловіка: Зайди зі мною в дім, пообідай і я дам тобі дари!
Then the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.”
Та Божий чоловік сказав цареві: Якщо й даси мені половину твого дому, не ввійду з тобою, не їстиму хліба і не питиму води в цьому місці!
But the man of God said to the king, “If you were to give me half your house I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place.
Адже так мені Господь заповів словом, наказуючи: Не їстимеш хліба, не питимеш води і не повернешся дорогою, якою прийдеш.
“For so it was commanded me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘You shall eat no bread, nor drink water, nor return by the way which you came.’”
І він пішов іншою дорогою, і не повернувся дорогою, якою прибув до Ветиля.
So he went another way and did not return by the way which he came to Bethel.
А у Ветилі жив один старий пророк, і прийшли його сини та розповіли йому про всі діла, які вчинив Божий чоловік у той день у Ветилі, і слова, які він промовив до царя. І повернули обличчя їхнього батька.
The Disobedient Prophet
Now an old prophet was living in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the deeds which the man of God had done that day in Bethel; the words which he had spoken to the king, these also they related to their father.
І їхній батько сказав їм, запитуючи: Якою дорогою пішов він? І його сини показали йому дорогу, якою пішов Божий чоловік, котрий прийшов із землі Юди.
Their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” Now his sons had seen the way which the man of God who came from Judah had gone.
І він сказав своїм синам: Засідлайте мені осла! Тож засідлали йому осла, і він сів на нього,
Then he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him and he rode away on it.
пішов за Божим чоловіком і знайшов його, коли той сидів під дубом, і сказав йому: Чи ти є Божий чоловік, який прийшов із землі Юди? А той відповів йому: Я.
So he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak; and he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” And he said, “I am.”
І сказав йому: Іди зі мною та з’їси хліба.
Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.”
Він же сказав: Не можу повернутися з тобою! Не їстиму хліба і не питиму води в цьому місці,
He said, “I cannot return with you, nor go with you, nor will I eat bread or drink water with you in this place.
бо так мені Господь заповів словом, наказуючи: Не їстимеш там хліба, не питимеш там води і не повернешся дорогою, якою ти прийшов!
“For a command came to me by the word of the LORD, ‘You shall eat no bread, nor drink water there; do not return by going the way which you came.’”
А він сказав йому: І я є пророком, так, як ти, і ангел промовив до мене Господнім словом, кажучи: Поверни його до себе, до твого дому, і нехай їсть хліб і п’є воду! Та він обманув його.
He said to him, “I also am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he lied to him.
І він повернув його, і той попоїв хліба і випив води в його домі.
So he went back with him, and ate bread in his house and drank water.
І сталося, коли вони сиділи за столом, було Господнє слово до пророка, який його повернув,
Now it came about, as they were sitting down at the table, that the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back;
і він промовив до Божого чоловіка, котрий прийшов із землі Юди, мовлячи: Так говорить Господь: Через те, що ти збунтувався проти Господнього слова і не виконав заповіді, яку тобі заповів Твій Господь Бог,
and he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Because you have disobeyed the command of the LORD, and have not observed the commandment which the LORD your God commanded you,
а повернувся, їв хліб і пив воду в цьому місці, про яке Я сказав тобі, наказуючи: Не їстимеш хліба і не питимеш води! — твоє тіло не ввійде в гробницю твоїх батьків.
but have returned and eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which He said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water”; your body shall not come to the grave of your fathers.’”
І сталося після того, як вони поїли хліба та попили води, то засідлали йому осла, і він повернувся.
It came about after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, that he saddled the donkey for him, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
І він пішов, та в дорозі натрапив на нього лев і його загриз. І його тіло було покинене на дорозі, і осел стояв над ним, а лев стояв біля тіла.
Now when he had gone, a lion met him on the way and killed him, and his body was thrown on the road, with the donkey standing beside it; the lion also was standing beside the body.
І ось проходили мужі, і побачили труп, покинений на дорозі, і лева, який стояв біля мерця. Тож увійшли і заговорили в місті, де жив старий пророк.
And behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown on the road, and the lion standing beside the body; so they came and told it in the city where the old prophet lived.
І почув той, хто повернув його з дороги, і сказав: Це — Божий чоловік, який збунтувався проти Господнього слова.
Now when the prophet who brought him back from the way heard it, he said, “It is the man of God, who disobeyed the command of the LORD; therefore the LORD has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke to him.”
Then he spoke to his sons, saying, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And they saddled it.
І він пішов, і знайшов його труп, покинений на дорозі, а також осла і лева, який стояв біля трупа, та лев не їв трупа Божого чоловіка й не розірвав осла.
He went and found his body thrown on the road with the donkey and the lion standing beside the body; the lion had not eaten the body nor torn the donkey.
І взяв пророк труп Божого чоловіка, і поклав його на осла, і пророк повернув його до міста, щоб його поховати
So the prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back, and he came to the city of the old prophet to mourn and to bury him.
у своєму гробі. І оплакували його: Горе, брате!
He laid his body in his own grave, and they mourned over him, saying, “Alas, my brother!”
І сталося після того, як закінчили оплакувати, то він сказав своїм синам, заповідаючи: Коли я помру, то поховайте мене в цій гробниці, в якій похований Божий чоловік, покладіть мене біля його костей, щоб мої кості врятувалися з його кістьми.
After he had buried him, he spoke to his sons, saying, “When I die, bury me in the grave in which the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones.
Адже неодмінно збудеться [1] сказане ним, що він прорік Господнім словом над вівтарем, який у Ветилі, і над домами на висотах, які в Самарії.
“For the thing shall surely come to pass which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria.”
Але і після цієї події Єровоам не відвернувся від свого зла, повернувся і зробив із частини народу священиків для висот. Хто бажав, того він освячував, і такий ставав священиком на висотах.
After this event Jeroboam did not return from his evil way, but again he made priests of the high places from among all the people; any who would, he ordained, to be priests of the high places.
