У п’явки були три дуже їй любі [1] дочки, і ці три не задовольнили її; не наситилась і четверта, щоб сказати: Досить!
Ад, любов жінки, Тартар [2] , не просякнута водою земля, вода та вогонь не скажуть: Досить!

Трьох речей не спроможний я збагнути, і четвертої мені не зрозуміти:

слід орла, який ширяє, шляхи змія на скелі, стежку корабля, що пливе посеред моря, і шляхи чоловіка в молодості.

Така ж дорога і жінки, яка чинить перелюб: коли вчинить, вмившись, вона каже, що не вчинила нічого такого, чого не слід.

Від трьох речей здригається земля, і четвертої не може знести:

А ось чотири дуже малі істоти на землі, та вони — мудріші мудрих:

Ось є троє, котрі мають легку ходу, і четвертий, який гарно ступає:
