У третьому році царства Йоакима, царя Юди, прийшов Навуходоносор, цар Вавилону, до Єрусалима і взяв його в облогу.

Daniel Removed to Babylon

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

І Господь дав у його руку Йоакима, царя Юди, і частину посуду Божого дому, і він їх поніс у землю Сеннаар, до дому свого бога. І він вніс посуд до дому скарбу свого бога.

And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

І сказав цар Асфанезові, старійшині своїх євнухів, ввести із синів ізраїльських полонених — і з царського насіння і з фортоммім [1] —

And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;

4

юнаків, тих, в яких немає пороку, і вони гарні на вигляд, обізнані в усій мудрості, і що мають знання і мислять розумно, і тих, у кого є сила стояти в домі царя, — і навчити їх письма та мови халдеїв.

Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

І цар їм заповів на кожний день із царського столу і з вина його напоїв, і щоб їх годували три роки, а після цього вони мають стати перед царем.

And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

І був між ними із синів Юди Даниїл, а також Ананія, Азарія і Місаїл.

Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

А начальник євнухів дав їм імена: Даниїлові — Валтасар, Ананії — Седрах, Місаїлові — Місах і Азарії — Авденаґо.

Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

І Даниїл постановив у своєму серці, щоб він не осквернився столом царя та вином його напоїв, тож просив начальника євнухів, щоб він не осквернився.

Daniel's Faithfulness

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

І Господь дав Даниїлові милість і співчуття з боку начальника євнухів.

Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

10

І сказав начальник євнухів Даниїлові: Я боюся мого пана царя, який приписав вашу їжу та ваш напій, щоби часом він не побачив ваші обличчя більш понурими за обличчя рабів, ваших однолітків, — і засудите мою голову перед царем.

And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.

11

Та Даниїл сказав Амелсадові, якого голова євнухів поставив над Даниїлом, Ананієм, Азарієм, Місаїлом:

Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

12

Випробуй твоїх рабів десять днів, і хай нам дають насіння, і їстимемо, і питимемо воду.

12

Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

13

І хай з’являться перед тобою. Порівняєш наш зовнішній вигляд і вигляд тих юнаків, які їдять зі столу царя, і що тільки побачиш, так і вчини з твоїми рабами!

Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

14

І він їх послухався, і випробував їх десять днів.

14

So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

15

А по закінченні десяти днів їхні обличчя стали хорошими, і тілом вони виявилися сильними — понад юнаків, які їли зі столу царя.

15

And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.

16

І Амелсад був той, що викидав їхню вечерю і вино їхнього напою, а давав їм насіння.

16

Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.

17

І ці юнаки, ці чотири, їм Бог дав знання, розум і мудрість в усьому книжному. А Даниїл був обізнаний в усякому видінні та снах.

Daniel's Wisdom

As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

18

Після закінчення днів, про які сказав цар привести їх, привів їх голова євнухів перед Навуходоносора.

Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

19

І цар поговорив з ними, і з усіх них не знайдено подібних до Даниїла, Ананії, Азарії та Місаїла. І вони предстали перед царем.

19

And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

20

І в усякому слові мудрості та вміння, які випитував у них цар, він знайшов їх вдесятеро розумнішими за всіх заклиначів і ворожбитів, що були в усьому його царстві.

20

And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

21

І Даниїл був аж до першого року царя Кира.

21

And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
