The Raising of Lazarus
A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha.

So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, “Lord, your dear friend is very sick.”
Почувши це, Ісус сказав: Ця хвороба не на смерть, але для Божої слави, щоби Божий Син прославився через неї!
But when Jesus heard about it he said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.”
Та коли почув, що він хворіє, то залишався два дні на тому місці, де перебував.
he stayed where he was for the next two days.
Після цього звелів учням: Підемо знову в Юдею!
Finally, he said to his disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.”
А учні сказали Йому: Учителю, таж ось юдеї намагалися Тебе камінням побити, а Ти знову туди йдеш?
Ісус відповів: Хіба не дванадцять годин є на день? Якщо хто ходить вдень, не спотикається, адже бачить світло цього світу.
Jesus replied, “There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world.
Якщо хто ходить уночі, то спотикається, бо немає світла в ньому!
But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.”
Сказавши це, вів далі: Наш друг Лазар заснув, — піду розбудити його.
Then he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.”
А Його учні сказали: Господи, якщо заснув, то одужає!
The disciples said, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!”
Ісус сказав про його смерть, а вони подумали, що Він говорить про звичайний сон.
They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.
і радію за вас, що Я там не був, щоб ви повірили; та ходімо до нього.
And for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. Come, let’s go see him.”
Тоді Хома, званий ще Близнюком, сказав іншим співучням: Ходімо й ми, щоб померти з Ним!
Коли Ісус прийшов, то знайшов, що він уже чотири дні як перебуває в гробі.
When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days.
Витанія була поблизу Єрусалима, якихось п’ятнадцять стадій,
тож багато юдеїв прийшло до Марти й Марії, щоб розрадити їх за брата.
and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss.
Коли ж Марта почула, що йде Ісус, то вийшла Йому назустріч. Марія ж сиділа вдома.
When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house.
Марта сказала Ісусові: Господи, якби Ти був тут, не помер би мій брат.
Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.
Але й тепер знаю, що Бог дасть Тобі те, що лише попросиш у Бога.
But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”
Говорить Йому Марта: Знаю, що воскресне у воскресінні, останнього дня.
“Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”
Та Ісус їй сказав: Я є воскресіння і життя; хто вірить у Мене, — хоч і помре, буде жити.
І кожний, хто живе й вірить у Мене, — не помре повік. Чи віриш ти в це?
Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”
Каже Йому: Так, Господи, я повірила, що Ти — Христос, Син Божий, Який приходить у світ.
“Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.”
Сказавши це, вона пішла й покликала свою сестру Марію. Вона пошепки промовила: Учитель прийшов і кличе тебе!
Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.”
оскільки Ісус ще не прийшов до села, а був на тому місці, де зустріла Його Марта.
Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him.
А юдеї, які були з нею в хаті й потішали її, побачивши, що Марія швидко встала й вийшла, подалися за нею, гадаючи, що вона пішла до гробниці, щоб там поплакати.
When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there.
Коли Марія прийшла туди, де був Ісус, і побачила Його, то впала Йому до ніг і промовила: Господи, якби Ти був тут, мій брат не помер би!
When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
Ісус, побачивши, що вона плаче, та юдеї, які прийшли з нею, також плачуть, розжалобився духом і Сам зворушився.
І Він запитав: Де ви його поклали? Йому відповіли: Господи, іди поглянь!
“Where have you put him?” he asked them.
They told him, “Lord, come and see.”
They told him, “Lord, come and see.”
А юдеї загомоніли: Дивись, як Він любив його!
The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!”
Деякі з них зауважили: Хіба не міг Той, Хто відкрив очі сліпому, зробити так, щоб і цей не помер?
But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?”
Перебуваючи у внутрішній жалобі, Ісус підходить до гробниці. Це була печера, до якої прилягав камінь.
Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance.
Ісус промовив: Відваліть камінь! Марта, сестра померлого, сказала Йому: Господи, вже чути запах, бо чотири дні вже минуло!
“Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them.
But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”

Ісус їй відповів: Хіба не сказав Я тобі, що коли будеш вірити, — побачиш Божу славу?
Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?”
Відвалили камінь від печери, [де лежав померлий]. Ісус звів очі вгору й промовив: Отче, дякую Тобі, що Ти вислухав Мене.
So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me.
Я знав, що Ти завжди Мене вислуховуєш, але задля натовпу, який стоїть довкола, Я сказав, — аби повірили, що Ти Мене послав!
You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.”
Промовивши це, Він вигукнув гучним голосом: Лазарю, вийди сюди!
Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!”
І померлий вийшов. Руки й ноги його були обмотані полотном, а його обличчя обв’язане хусткою. Каже їм Ісус: Розв’яжіть його й звільніть, щоб міг ходити.
And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”
Тоді багато юдеїв, які прийшли до Марії та побачили, що Він зробив, повірили в Нього.
The Plot to Kill Jesus
Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen.
Деякі з них пішли до фарисеїв і розповіли їм, що вчинив Ісус.
But some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
Зібрали первосвященики й фарисеї раду і говорили: Що нам робити? Адже Ця Людина робить багато чудес!
Якщо залишимо Його, то всі повірять у Нього; і прийдуть римляни, і віднімуть у нас і храм, і народ!
Один же з них, Каяфа, який був того року первосвящеником, сказав їм: Ви нічого не знаєте!
Хіба не розумієте, що краще для вас, щоб Одна Людина померла за народ, а не щоб увесь народ загинув?
You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.”
Це він сказав не від себе, але, бувши того року первосвящеником, пророкував, що Ісус мав померти за народ, —
He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation.
і не тільки за народ, але щоб і розсіяних Божих дітей зібрати разом.
And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world.
Отже, із цього дня вони змовилися вбити Його.
So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death.
Ісус більше не ходив відкрито між юдеями, але пішов звідти в край, що біля пустелі, до міста, яке називається Єфрем, і там залишався з учнями.
As a result, Jesus stopped his public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.
Наближалася юдейська Пасха, і багато людей з країни пішли в Єрусалим перед Пасхою, щоб очиститися.
It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began.
Шукали тоді Ісуса і, стоячи в храмі, говорили між собою: Як ви вважаєте, чи прийде Він на свято?
They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other, “What do you think? He won’t come for Passover, will he?”
