Greeting to the Twelve Tribes

James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad:
Greetings.

Брати мої, майте велику радість, коли попадаєте в різні випробування,

Profiting from Trials

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,

знаючи, що випробування вашої віри розвиває терпеливість.

knowing that the testing of your faith produces [a]patience.

4

А терпеливість нехай має досконалу дію, щоб ви були досконалі та бездоганні й щоб нічого вам не бракувало.

But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be [b]perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

5

Якщо комусь із вас бракує мудрості, нехай просить у Бога, Який дає всім щедро і не докоряє, тож буде йому дано.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

6

Та нехай просить з вірою, без жодного сумніву. Бо хто має сумнів, той подібний до морської хвилі, котру підіймають та женуть вітри.

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.

7

Така людина хай не думає, що отримає щось від Господа,

7

For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;

8

адже двоєдушний чоловік непостійний на всіх своїх шляхах.

he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

9

Тож нехай покірний брат хвалиться своїм високим становищем,

The Perspective of Rich and Poor

Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation,

10

а багатий — своїм пониженням, бо промине, як цвіт рослин:

but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away.

11

зійшло сонце, припекло, висушило траву — і їхній цвіт осипався, і краса їхнього вигляду зникла, отак і багатий на своїх дорогах зів’яне.

For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.

12

Блаженний муж, який подолає спокусу, бо коли буде випробуваний, то одержить вінець життя, що його [Господь] обіцяв тим, хто любить Його.

Loving God Under Trials

Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

13

Ніхто зі спокушуваних хай не каже, що Бог його спокушує, адже Бог не спокушується злом, і Сам не спокушає нікого.

13

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.

14

Кожний випробовується власною пожадливістю, яка затягує і вловлює.

14

But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.

15

Пожадливість дає зачаток і породжує гріх, а вчинений гріх породжує смерть.

15

Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

16

Не піддавайтеся обманові, любі мої брати!

16

Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

17

Усе добре, що нам дане, і кожний досконалий дар походить згори, сходить від Отця світла, в Якого немає зміни, ні тіні переміни.

17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

18

Він забажав і породив нас Словом істини, щоб ми стали наче початком Його творіння.

18

Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

19

Знайте, мої улюблені брати: кожна людина нехай буде швидкою до слухання, стримана в словах, повільна на гнів.

Qualities Needed in Trials

[c]So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

20

Адже людський гнів не здійснює Божої справедливості.

20

for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

21

Тому, відкинувши всяку нечистоту і рештки злоби, з лагідністю прийміть посіяне Слово, що може спасти ваші душі.

Doers — Not Hearers Only

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and [d]overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

22

Будьте виконавцями Слова, а не лише слухачами, які обманюють самих себе.

22

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

23

Бо коли хто є слухачем Слова, а не виконавцем, той подібний до людини, яка розглядає природні риси свого обличчя у дзеркалі:

23

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;

24

тож побачив себе, відійшов і тут же забув, який він.

24

for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

25

А хто дивиться на досконалий закон свободи і перебуває в ньому, той не слухач-забудько, а виконавець діла; він буде блаженний у своїх діях.

25

But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

26

Коли хто думає, що він [між вами] побожний, але не приборкує свого язика, той лише обманює своє серце: його побожність — примарна.

26

If anyone [e]among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.

27

Чиста й непорочна побожність перед Богом і Отцем — це відвідувати сиріт і вдів у їхньому горі, зберігати себе чистим від світу.

27

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
