І сталося, що після смерті Ісуса Ізраїльські сини звернулися до Господа, запитуючи: Хто з нас як вождь піде на Ханаанця, щоб воювати проти нього.

War against Remaining Canaanites

Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

А Господь сказав: Юда піде! Ось Я дав цю землю йому в руки!

And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

3

Юда ж сказав своєму братові Симеону: Піди зі мною до мого спадку, і воюватимемо проти ханаанців, — піду і я з тобою у твій спадок! І Симеон пішов з ним.

And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

Тож Юда пішов, і Господь дав Ханаанця та Ферезейця йому в руки, і вони побили їх у Везеку — десять тисяч чоловік.

And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

У Везеку вони знайшли Адонівезека, воювали проти нього і побили Ханаанця та Ферезейця.

And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

Адонівезек же втік, та вони гналися за ним, схопили його і відрубали великі пальці його рук та його ніг.

But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

7

Тоді Адонівезек сказав: Сімдесят царів із відрубаними великими пальцями їхніх рук і їхніх ніг збирали їжу під моїм столом. Отже, як учинив я, так і віддав мені Бог! Його відвели в Єрусалим, і він там помер.

And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

Сини Юди воювали проти Єрусалима, взяли його і побили його вістрям меча, місто ж спалили вогнем.

Jerusalem and Hebron Captured

Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

Після цього сини Юди зійшлися воювати проти Ханаанця, який жив у горах, на півдні та на рівнині.

And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.

Юда виступив проти Ханаанця, який жив у Хевроні, а жителі Хеврона вийшли назустріч. Раніше ім’я Хеврона було Каріатарвоксефер. Він побив Сесія, Ахімана і Толмія, з роду Енака.

And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

А звідти вони пішли до тих, які жили в Давірі. Раніше ім’я Давіра було Місто писарів.

Additional Cities Captured

And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:

І сказав Халев: Хто лиш поб’є Місто писарів і заволодіє ним, тому дам Асхану, мою дочку, за жінку.

And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

13

І першим захопив його Ґотоніїл, син Кенеза, молодший брат Халева, тож він дав йому Асхану, свою дочку, за жінку.

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

14

І сталося, коли вона відходила, він намовив її просити у свого батька поле, тож вона бурмотіла на осляті, а тоді закричала з осляти: У південну землю ти мене віддав! І Халев запитав її: Що тобі потрібно?

And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?

Асха ж відповіла йому: Дай мені благословення, бо ти мене віддав у південну землю, тож дай мені як придане водні джерела. І Халев дав їй придане за її серцем — Верхні і Нижні джерела, як придане.

And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

І сини Йовава, кінейця, Мойсеєвого тестя, пішли з Міста фініків до синів Юди, у пустелю, що є на півдні біля схилу Арада, тож вони пішли і поселилися з народом.

And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

17

А Юда зі своїм братом Симеоном виступили і побили Ханаанця, який жив у Сефеті. Вони зробили його закляттям — вигубили його — і дали назву місту: Загибель.

And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

18

Юда не зміг отримати в спадок Ґазу та її околиці, Аскалон та його околиці, Акарон та його околиці, Азот та його околиці.

Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.

19

Та Господь був з Юдою, і він успадкував гору, оскільки не міг успадкувати тих, які жили на рівнині, бо Рихав протистояв йому на ній.

And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

20

А Халевові віддали Хеврон, як і сказав Мойсей. Він успадкував там три міста і вигнав звідти трьох синів Енака.

And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.

21

Євусея, який жив у Єрусалимі, сини Веніаміна не вигнали, тож Євусей жив із синами Веніаміна, — і так є аж до цього дня.

And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

22

А сини Йосифа, — пішли і вони до Ветиля, і Юда — з ними.

22

And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them.

23

Тож дім Ізраїля отаборився біля Ветиля. Раніше назва міста була Луза.

23

And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

24

А історія така: вартові побачили чоловіка, який виходив з міста, вони схопили його і сказали йому: Покажи нам прохід до міста, і вчинимо тобі милосердя!

And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.

25

І той показав їм прохід до міста, і вони розгромили місто вістрям меча, а чоловіка і його рід відпустили.

25

And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.

26

І той чоловік пішов у землю хетів, збудував там місто і дав йому назву — Луза, і це його назва аж до цього дня.

26

And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.

27

Манасія не успадкував Ветсан, що є містом скитів, ні його дочірніх поселень, ні його околиці, ні Ектанаад та його дочірніх, ні тих, які жили в Дорі, її дочірніх, і тих, які жили у Валаамі, його дочірніх, і тих, які жили в Маґедоні, та його дочірніх, ні тих, які жили в Євламі, ні його дочірніх. І Ханаанець почав жити в цій землі.

Places Not Conquered

Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

Та сталося, коли Ізраїль став сильним, то зробив Ханаанця данником, та однак не прогнав [1] його повністю.

And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

29

І Єфрем не вигнав Ханаанця, який жив у Ґазері, і жив Ханаанець посеред нього в Ґазері, і був данником.

29

Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

30

А Завулон не вигнав тих, які жили в Кедроні, і тих, які жили в Енаалі. Тож Ханаанець жив посеред нього, і був його данником.

30

Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

31

Асир не вигнав тих, які жили в Акхоні, і вони були йому данниками, і тих, які жили в Дорі, і тих, які жили в Сідоні, і тих, які жили в Аалафі, Ахазіві, Хелві, Афеку і в Роові.

Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:

32

Тож Асир жив посеред Ханаанця, який проживав у землі, бо не зміг його вигнати.

But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

33

І Нефталим не вигнав тих, які жили у Ветсамусі, ні тих, які жили у Ветенеті, і жив Ізраїль посеред Ханаанця, який проживав у землі. А ті, які жили у Ветсамусі та у Ветенеті, були їм данниками.

33

Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.

І загнав Аморей синів Дана на гору, бо не дозволяв їм зійти в долину.

And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:

35

І почав Аморей жити на горі Мурсінона, де ведмеді та лисиці. Та рука дому Йосифа стала важкою на Амореєві, і він став данником.

35

But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

36

Ось границя Аморея: Ідумей, вгорі над Акравіном на Камені й вище.

36

And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
