When the Gazites were told, “Samson has come here!” they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the gate of the city. They were quiet all night, saying, “In the morning, when it is daylight, we will kill him.”

And Samson lay low till midnight; then he arose at midnight, took hold of the doors of the gate of the city and the two gateposts, pulled them up, bar and all, put them on his shoulders, and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.

And the lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her, “Entice him, and find out where his great strength lies, and by what means we may overpower him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and every one of us will give you eleven hundred pieces of silver.”
І Даліла говорила до Самсона: Сповісти мені, у чому твоя велика сила і чим будеш зв’язаний, щоб тебе впокорити?
So Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me where your great strength lies, and with what you may be bound to afflict you.”
А Самсон відповів їй: Якщо мене зв’яжуть сімома сирими, не ушкодженими тятивами, то стану слабким і буду, наче один із людей.
And Samson said to her, “If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings, not yet dried, then I shall become weak, and be like any other man.”
І принесли їй сатрапи филистимців сім сирих, неушкоджених тятив, і вона зв’язала його ними.
So the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven fresh bowstrings, not yet dried, and she bound him with them.
А вони сиділи в засідці на нього в кімнаті, і вона сказала йому: Филистимці на тебе, Самсоне! Та він розірвав тятиви, як розривається жмут клоччя, коли відчує вогонь. І вони не пізнали секрету його сили.
Now men were lying in wait, staying with her in the room. And she said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he broke the bowstrings as a strand of yarn breaks when it touches fire. So the secret of his strength was not known.
І сказала Даліла Самсонові: Ось ти мене обманув і сказав мені неправду, тож тепер сповісти мені, чим тебе можна зв’язати!
Then Delilah said to Samson, “Look, you have mocked me and told me lies. Now, please tell me what you may be bound with.”
І він сказав їй: Якщо мене справді зв’яжуть [1] сімома новими шнурами, які не були в роботі, то я ослабну і стану таким, як один із людей.
І взяла для нього Даліла нові шнури, зв’язала його ними і сказала йому: Филистимці на тебе, Самсоне! А засідка сиділа в кімнаті. Та він зірвав їх зі своїх рук, наче нитку.
Therefore Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them, and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And men were lying in wait, staying in the room. But he broke them off his arms like a thread.
І Даліла сказала Самсонові: Аж дотепер ти мене обманював і говорив мені неправду. Та врешті-решт сповісти мені, чим можна тебе зв’язати! І він сказав їй: Якщо сплетеш сім кучерів моєї голови з пряжею і приб’єш кілком до стіни, то буду слабкий, такий, як один з людей!
Delilah said to Samson, “Until now you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me what you may be bound with.”
And he said to her, “If you weave the seven locks of my head into the web of the loom” —

So she wove it tightly with the batten of the loom, and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he awoke from his sleep, and pulled out the batten and the web from the loom.
І сказала йому Даліла: Як ти можеш говорити: Полюбив я тебе! — а твоє серце не зі мною? Це вже втретє обманув ти мене і не сповістив мені, у чому твоя велика сила!
Then she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and have not told me where your great strength lies.”
І сталося, коли надокучила йому своїми словами цілу ніч, і дуже надокучила йому, і він ослаб аж до смерті.
І сповістив їй усе, що на його серці, розказуючи їй: Оскільки я є Божим назореєм від лона моєї матері, то до моєї голови не повинна торкатися бритва, та якщо я буду поголений, то моя сила відійде від мене, ослабну і буду таким, як усі люди.
that he told her all his heart, and said to her, “No razor has ever come upon my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaven, then my strength will leave me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.”
І Даліла зрозуміла, що він сповістив їй усе зі свого серця, послала і покликала всіх сатрапів филистимців, кажучи: Прийдіть ще раз, бо він сповістив мені все, що на його серці. І всі сатрапи филистимців прийшли до неї, і принесли гроші у своїх руках.
When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up once more, for he has told me all his heart.” So the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought the money in their hand.
Вона ж приспала його між своїми колінами, покликала стрижія, і той обстриг сім кучерів його голови. І він почав упокорятися, і його сила відійшла від нього.
А Даліла сказала йому: Филистимці на тебе, Самсоне! І він пробудився зі свого сну, і сказав: Вийду і вчиню так, як і завжди, скину їх із себе! Та він не знав, що Господь відступив від нього.
And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” So he awoke from his sleep, and said, “I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!” But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him.
І филистимці схопили його, вибрали йому очі, повели його до Ґази і закували його мідними оковами, і він молов у домі в’язниці.
Та після того, як був пострижений, волосся його голови почало відростати.
However, the hair of his head began to grow again after it had been shaven.

Samson Dies with the Philistines
Now the lords of the Philistines gathered together to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice. And they said:
“Our god has delivered into our hands
Samson our enemy!”

І побачив його народ, і хвалили своїх богів, кажучи: Наш бог передав у наші руки нашого ворога, — того, який спустошив нашу землю, який помножив наші рани!
When the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said:
“Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy,
The destroyer of our land,
And the one who multiplied our dead.”
“Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy,
The destroyer of our land,
And the one who multiplied our dead.”
І сталося, коли розвеселилося їхнє серце, то вони сказали: Покличте Самсона з дому в’язниці, і нехай забавляє нас! І покликали Самсона з в’язничного дому, і забавлялися з нього, і поставили його між двома стовпами.
So it happened, when their hearts were merry, that they said, “Call for Samson, that he may perform for us.” So they called for Samson from the prison, and he performed for them. And they stationed him between the pillars.
А Самсон звернувся до хлопчини, який водив його: Дай відпочити мені й учини, щоб я доторкнувся до стовпів, на яких стоїть дім, і опруся на них. Слуга ж учинив так.
Then Samson said to the lad who held him by the hand, “Let me feel the pillars which support the temple, so that I can lean on them.”
А дім був повний чоловіків і жінок, і всі сатрапи филистимців були там, на даху приблизно три тисячі чоловіків і жінок, які спостерігали, як забавлялися із Самсона.
Now the temple was full of men and women. All the lords of the Philistines were there — about three thousand men and women on the roof watching while Samson performed.
І заволав Самсон до Господа, кажучи: Господи, Господи, згадай мене і зміцни мене тільки ще на цей раз, і віддам помсту раз за два мої ока на филистимцях!
Then Samson called to the Lord, saying, “O Lord God, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once, O God, that I may with one blow take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes!”
І Самсон обхопив два середні стовпи, на яких будинок тримався, і він оперся на них, — один в його правиці, а один в його лівиці.
And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars which supported the temple, and he braced himself against them, one on his right and the other on his left.
І сказав Самсон: Нехай помре моя душа з филистимцями! І він нахилився із силою, і будинок упав на сатрапів і на весь народ, який був у ньому. І було мертвих, яких убив Самсон при своїй смерті, більше, ніж тих, яких убив за свого життя.
Then Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” And he pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people who were in it. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than he had killed in his life.
І прийшли його брати і весь дім його батька, вони взяли його, пішли і поховали його між Сараа і між Естаолом у гробниці Маноя, його батька. А судив він Ізраїля двадцять років.
And his brothers and all his father’s household came down and took him, and brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father Manoah. He had judged Israel twenty years.
