Danites Seek Territory
In those days there was no king of Israel; and in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking an inheritance for themselves to live in, for until that day an inheritance had not been allotted to them as a possession among the tribes of Israel.

Тож сини Дана послали зі своїх родин п’ять мужів з їхньої частини, сильних синів із Сараа і Естаола, щоб обстежити землю і пройти її, і сказали їм: Підіть і обстежте землю! Вони прийшли до гори Єфрема аж до дому Міхи і зупинилися там.
So the sons of Dan sent from their family five men out of their whole number, valiant men from Zorah and Eshtaol, to spy out the land and to search it; and they said to them, “Go, search the land.” And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.
Коли вони були поблизу дому Міхи, вони впізнали голос молодого юнака-левіта, тож звернули туди і запитали його: Хто тебе привів сюди? Що ти тут робиш, і як тобі тут є?
When they were near the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young man, the Levite; and they turned aside there and said to him, “Who brought you here? And what are you doing in this place? And what do you have here?”
А він відповів їм: Так і так учинив зі мною Міха і найняв мене, і я став йому за священика.
He said to them, “Thus and so has Micah done to me, and he has hired me and I have become his priest.”
Тоді вони сказали йому: Запитай же в Бога, і довідаємося, чи доброю буде наша дорога, якою ми йдемо.
They said to him, “Inquire of God, please, that we may know whether our way on which we are going will be prosperous.”
Ідіть в мирі, — сказав їм священик, — перед Господом дорога ваша, якою ви йдете!
The priest said to them, “Go in peace; your way in which you are going has the LORD’S approval.”
І п’ять мужів пішли. Вони прийшли до Лаїси, і побачили народ, який жив у ньому, що сидів упевнено за приписами сидонян, спокійні в надії, і не могли сказати слова, бо далеко є від Сидону, і не було угоди в них із сирійцями.
Then the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people who were in it living in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and secure; for there was no ruler humiliating them for anything in the land, and they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone.
І прийшли п’ять мужів до їхніх братів, до Сарра і Естаола, і сказали їм їхні брати: Чому ви сидите?
When they came back to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers said to them, “What do you report?”
І сказали: Встаньте, і ходімо проти них! Адже ми ввійшли і пройшли землю аж до Лаїса, і побачили народ, який живе в ньому в надії за приписами сидонян, і далеко є від Сидону, і угоди немає в них із Сирією, але встаньте, і підемо проти них, бо ми знайшли землю, і ось вона дуже добра! І ви мовчите? Не полінуйтеся піти, щоб іти й успадкувати землю.
They said, “Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good. And will you sit still? Do not delay to go, to enter, to possess the land.
Коли ввійдете, підете до впевненого народу, і земля широка, бо Бог передав її в нашу руку, місце, де немає там браку всякої речі, що на землі.
“When you enter, you will come to a secure people with a spacious land; for God has given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything that is on the earth.”
І шістсот чоловіків з роду Дана, підперезаних військовою зброєю, піднялися із Сараа і Естаола.
Then from the family of the Danites, from Zorah and from Eshtaol, six hundred men armed with weapons of war set out.
Вони пішли і отаборилися в Каріятіарімі в Юди. Через це названо те місце — Табір Дана — аж до цього дня, ось за Каріятіарімом.
They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. Therefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan to this day; behold, it is west of Kiriath-jearim.

They passed from there to the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah.

Danites Take Micah’s Idols
Then the five men who went to spy out the country of Laish said to their kinsmen, “Do you know that there are in these houses an ephod and household idols and a graven image and a molten image? Now therefore, consider what you should do.”
Вони звернули туди і ввійшли в дім юнака-левіта, у дім Міхи, і привітали його.
They turned aside there and came to the house of the young man, the Levite, to the house of Micah, and asked him of his welfare.
А шістсот мужів, підперезаних військовою зброєю, стояли біля дверей брами, ті із синів Дана.
The six hundred men armed with their weapons of war, who were of the sons of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate.
І прийшли п’ятеро мужів, які ходили обстежувати землю. Прийшовши туди, взяли різьблене, ефод, терафін і вилите, а священик стояв біля дверей воріт, і шістсот чоловік, підперезаних військовою зброєю.
Now the five men who went to spy out the land went up and entered there, and took the graven image and the ephod and household idols and the molten image, while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war.
Тож вони ввійшли в дім Міхи і забрали ефод, терафін, вилите і різьблене. А священик запитав їх: Що ви робите?
When these went into Micah’s house and took the graven image, the ephod and household idols and the molten image, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”
Вони ж у відповідь сказали йому: Мовчи, поклади свою руку на свої уста і йди з нами, і будеш нам за батька і за священика! Хіба краще бути тобі священиком дому одного чоловіка, чи бути тобі священиком племені й роду в Ізраїлі?
They said to him, “Be silent, put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for you to be a priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?”
І зраділо серце священика, і він взяв ефод, терафін, різьблене та коване, і ввійшов посеред народу.
The priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod and household idols and the graven image and went among the people.
Вони повернулися і відійшли, і поставили в лави дім і свою значну кількість худоби перед ними.
Then they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the livestock and the valuables in front of them.
А коли вони відійшли далеко від дому Міхи, то ось Міха і мужі, які з дому Міхи, почали кричати за синами Дана.
When they had gone some distance from the house of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah’s house assembled and overtook the sons of Dan.
Тоді сини Дана повернули свої обличчя і промовили до Міхи: Що тобі, що ти закричав?
They cried to the sons of Dan, who turned around and said to Micah, “What is the matter with you, that you have assembled together?”
І сказав Міха: Бо моє різьблене, яке я собі зробив, ви забрали і священика, і відійшли! І як мені бути далі? Тож чому це кажете мені: Чого це кричиш?
He said, “You have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and have gone away, and what do I have besides? So how can you say to me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”
А сини Дана сказали йому: Хай не буде чути твого голосу за нами, щоби часом не вийшли назустріч вам мужі, розлючені душею, і приєднаєш душу твою і душу твого дому.
The sons of Dan said to him, “Do not let your voice be heard among us, or else fierce men will fall upon you and you will lose your life, with the lives of your household.”
І пішли сини Дана своєю дорогою, а Міха побачив, що вони сильніші за нього, розвернувся і повернувся до свого дому.
So the sons of Dan went on their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house.
І вони взяли те, що зробив Міха, і священика, який був у нього, і пішли аж до Лаїса проти спокійного і безпечного народу, побили їх вістрям меча, а місто спалили.
Then they took what Micah had made and the priest who had belonged to him, and came to Laish, to a people quiet and secure, and struck them with the edge of the sword; and they burned the city with fire.
І не було нікого, хто врятував би його, бо далеко він від сидонян, і угоди не було в них з ніким, і воно в долині, яка належить домові Роова. Вони збудували місто і поселилися в ньому,
And there was no one to deliver them, because it was far from Sidon and they had no dealings with anyone, and it was in the valley which is near Beth-rehob. And they rebuilt the city and lived in it.
і назвали місто іменем Дана за іменем їхнього батька, який народився Ізраїлеві. А раніше ім’я міста було Лаїс.
They called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father who was born in Israel; however, the name of the city formerly was Laish.
І поставили собі сини Дана різьблене Міхи, і Йонатан, син Ґерсома, сина Мойсея, він та його сини були священиками племені Дана аж до дня переселення землі.
The sons of Dan set up for themselves the graven image; and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.
