І промовив Господь до Ґедеона: Численний той народ, що з тобою, так що не передам Я Мадіяма в їхню руку, щоби часом Ізраїль не хвалився переді Мною, кажучи: Моя рука мене спасла!
And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’

Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’ ” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.

But the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. Then it will be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.”

So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink.”
І кількість усіх тих, які хлебтали своїм язиком, була триста чоловік, а всі решта з народу схилилися на свої коліна, щоби пити воду.
And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water.
Тоді Господь сказав Ґедеонові: Трьома сотнями чоловік, які хлебтали воду, спасу вас і передам Мадіяма у твою руку, а весь народ нехай відійде — кожний до його місцевості.
І вони взяли їжу народу у свою руку і свої роги. Він усіх ізраїльських мужів відіслав — кожного до свого житла, і тільки трьохсот мужів затримав. А табір Мадіяма був під ним у долині.
So the people took provisions and their trumpets in their hands. And he sent away all the rest of Israel, every man to his tent, and retained those three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.
І сталося тієї ночі, і сказав йому Господь: Устань, швидко спустися звідси до табору, бо Я його передав у твою руку!
It happened on the same night that the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.

But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant,
і послухай, що вони говорять. І після цього зміцняться твої руки, і зійдеш вниз у табір. І спустився він та його раб Фара в частину табору начальників над п’ятдесятьма воїнами.
А Мадіям, Амалик і всі сини сходу отаборилися в долині, численністю як саранча, і їхнім верблюдам не було рахунку, але кількістю були, наче пісок, що на березі моря.
Тож Ґедеон увійшову табір, і ось муж розповідав сон своєму ближньому і сказав: Ось сон, який мені приснився: Бачу буханка ячмінного хліба котиться по табору Мадіяма, і налетіла на намет Мадіяма, і вдарила його, і перевернула його, і намет упав!
And when Gideon had come, there was a man telling a dream to his companion. He said, “I have had a dream: To my surprise, a loaf of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent and struck it so that it fell and overturned, and the tent collapsed.”
А його ближній у відповідь сказав: Це — не що інше, як меч Ґедеона, сина Йоаса, ізраїльського мужа! Господь передав в його руки Мадіяма і весь табір!
Then his companion answered and said, “This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel! Into his hand God has delivered Midian and the whole camp.”
І сталося, коли Ґедеон почув розповідь сну та його пояснення, то поклонився Господу й повернувся до ізраїльського табору, закликаючи: Вставайте, бо Господь передав у ваші руки табір Мадіяма!
And so it was, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel, and said, “Arise, for the Lord has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.”
І він розділив триста мужів на три частини, і дав роги в руки всіх, порожні глечики, а всередині глечиків — смолоскипи.
Then he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet into every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and torches inside the pitchers.
І він сказав їм: На моєму прикладі побачите, і так само ви будете робити! Ось я входжу всередину табору, і буде, що тільки зроблю я, так само зробите і ви.
And he said to them, “Look at me and do likewise; watch, and when I come to the edge of the camp you shall do as I do:
Затрублю в ріг я, то й усі ви, які зі мною, затрубите в роги довкола табору і вигукнете: Господу і Ґедеонові!
When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets on every side of the whole camp, and say, ‘The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!’ ”
Тож Ґедеон і з ним сто мужів увійшли на територію табору, коли починалася північна сторожа. Вони таки дійсно сполохали [1] вартових, затрубили в роги і скинули глечики, що в їхніх руках.
So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outpost of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just as they had posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers that were in their hands.
І затрубили три частини в роги, скинули глечики і взяли у свої ліві руки смолоскипи, а у свої праві руки — роги, щоби трубити, і закричали: Меч Господу і Ґедеонові!
Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers — they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing — and they cried, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!”
І кожний стояв сам по собі довкола табору, а весь табір побіг; вони подали знак і втекли.
And every man stood in his place all around the camp; and the whole army ran and cried out and fled.
І затрубили триста рогів, а Господь в цілому таборі налаштував меч кожного на свого ближнього, і табір утік аж до Ветасетти, і зібралися разом аж біля берега Авелмеула, поблизу Тавата.
І закричали мужі ізраїльські з племені Нефталима, з Асира і з усього Манасії, і погналися за Мадіямом.
And the men of Israel gathered together from Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and pursued the Midianites.
А Ґедеон послав послів до всіх околиць Єфрема, кажучи: Спустіться назустріч Мадіямові й захопіть собі воду аж до Ветвира і Йордану! І закричав кожний чоловік Єфрема, і вони першими захопили воду аж до Ветвира і Йордан.
Then Gideon sent messengers throughout all the mountains of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites, and seize from them the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan.” Then all the men of Ephraim gathered together and seized the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan.
І взяли двох вождів Мадіяма: Орива і Зива. Орива вони вбили в Суріні, а Зива вбили в Якефзиві, і погналися за Мадіямом. Голову Орива і Зива з протилежного боку Йордану принесли до Ґедеона.
And they captured two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued Midian and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.
